Following a local business meeting, our party of 9 visited Villagio for an evening meal, one of several visits we have made over the past 3 years. The atmosphere is welcoming, lively, the staff attentive but not overly so - there when needed, invisible when not!. The food is good basic wholesome Italian and, like the wine list, modestly priced. This is a popular pre- and post-theatre venue with the Hammersmith Apollo, Lyric Theatre and Riverside Studios close by. There is an adjacent large basement annexe which is much quieter than the main ground floor restaurant but advance booking is essential if you wish to be seated there. The food! Starters are generous with main courses also available in starter portions, all around the £6-£7 mark. Our choices ranged from Soup of the Day [minestrone] piping hot with baked ciabatta and deliciously filling, cherry tomato, red onions and pesto bruschetta for our veggie guest, perfect calamari served in a tower and perfectly cooked tiger prawns, with an without avocado in white wine, tomato and chilli completed the starters. Main course arrived promptly, all around the £10-£16 range. Chicken dishes are especially tasty and our lamb steaks were cooked to order from pink to cremated - takes all sorts! All served with inclusive vegetables - extras available. Pasta is unsurprisingly well cooked - well it IS Italian! -with various delicious and tasty sauces. All 9 guests were very happy with their choices! We always opt for the full bodied house red and crisply chilled dry white but there is a good range of moderately priced wines to suit all pockets and palates. Desserts were predictably good - tiramisu was creamy as was the cheesecake and chocolate fudge cake. Indecision over the ice cream flavours resulted in a makeshift and very much appreciated assortment for our guests. Spirits are relatively pricey at £3-£3.50 plus mixer so not for the pocket conscious. Ambience can be noisy so best to avoid early or late evening bookings. Quieter and more private meals can be enjoyed in the basement annexe. The bill for all 9 of us was £395 - £44 per head - very modest for the meals and drinks we had and the location. This was our 9th or 10th visit. It will definitely not be our last!
