Neighbourhood: Marylebone
Description: Here we have a London version of an authentic New York Deli. It's been family owned and run, at this very site, since 1900. Spick & span, it offers a welcoming range of classic deli lines plus hot soup & cooked dish-of-the-day. Terrific choice of sandwich fillings on a choice of breads. A little oasis of old world charm and hospitality in a 21st Century metropolis.

“Brilliant family-run cafe, old-fashioned, unspoilt and great value”
Reviewed 22 September 2012

i went to Rothe's today, the first time in about 15 years. I used to go there all the time for lunch when I worked nearby. The place hasn't changed at all. The service is efficient and extremely polite. The sandwich selection is vast and unusual and the soup is always good.

There's a huge selection of really good jams and chutneys on sale.

It's a gem of a place with real old-fasioned service and really good value. I can't believe I haven't been there for so long but I'm reassured that it's still going. Paul Rothe was still there, serving the teas but now his son has donned the white jacket and is 'front of house'. A real family-run cafe/deli. What a relief that there are still places like it in London.

“Great!”
Reviewed 20 August 2012

Old fashioned sandwich bar with deli. Home made soup is great, sandwiches top quality and the service is outstanding.Cups of tea just as they should be in a cafe and the posh modern coffee - espressos, americanos etc are spot on. Like going back 30 years!

“112 yrs. on, this delightful deli. remains an oasis of calm in an otherwise busy metropolis.”
Reviewed 17 April 2012

Just a stroll from Selfridges and even closer to the wonderful Marylebone High Street lies Paul Rothe & Son ... the take out/eat in deli. that's been family owned & run since 1900. You could well liken it to London's version of a classic, well-established, New York deli.
More than 25 yrs. have passed since I was last there and little, if anything, had changed. My wife and I chose it (12 Apr.) despite the plethora of other more 21st Century eateries in that part of the capital.
It was that sort of time of day when you are too late for lunch yet too early for supper. Despite an already long day's trading (and apparently one of the busiest for them in a long while) there was not the slightest hint of 'please can you be quick so that we can pack up and all go home'. Not a bit of it. An ernormous range of sandwich fillings beckoned from the refrigerated glass display counter and the choice made remarkably easy by virtue of the clearly defined, hand-rendered, long list running along the wall at the back. We were offered a choice of breads by the white coated, great grandson, of the originator and, once decided, he went to work, piling in the chosen fillings. With the sandwiches, we had perfectly acceptable tea & coffee. Seating arrangement was so in-keeping with the establishment in that they were of the 'pull down and sit quickly before they pop back again' type. As we sat and munched, we watched a member of staff tackle a giant pumpkin which was a worthy contender for 'best in show' at any annual county event. It was to be the essential ingredient of the next day's soup. We should've asked, if only out of interest, what the hot plat du jour would be. The clientele was eclectic and it was not difficult to ID the regulars. Along the whole of the r.h. wall, on entering, is an amazing, mixed display of jams, conserves and chutneys which we took advantage of and continue thoroughly to enjoy at home. "Paul Rothe & Son, I'm sure you'll still be at 35 Marlebone Lane in another 112 years time ... you jolly well deserve to be".

“Old-schol deli.”
Reviewed 1 December 2011

This gem has been owned by the same family for more than 100 years. Soup, salads and sandwiches are the main offerings, together with a selction of hot drinks. There is alose a very wide range of Tiptree jams available, and similar products from othe manufacturers. The staff are friendly and helpful. Nothing seems to be too much trouble. Sandwiches are made to order in front of you, for take-away or to eat in. I think it's great!
