Description: Located just off Grosvenor Square (entrance on South Audley Street) in the heart of Mayfair, 34 has become a modern-day classic since it opened in November 2011. Burned orange banquettes, oak parquet and a colourful contemporary art collection give the room a warm and inviting look, highlighted by the bespoke charcoal grill in the open kitchen. The grill, also known as a parrilla and fed by natural fuels, was custom-made and imported from Argentina. Head Chef, Harvey Ayliffe has developed an eclectic menu, using the grill not only for beef, but also for seasonal game, fish and shellfish. "Lobster mac" is a perennial favourite, and there is a wide variety of salads and lighter dishes for the less carnivorous diners.

A bit of a curate's egg.

The truffle lasagne was wonderful. The steak was lukewarm at best.
The wilted spinach side was a bit dry and strong tasting - possibly overcooked (for me anyway - got the same side in another restaurant the next night and I realized how bad the spinach in 34 was). The mac cheese side was the best I have ever tasted.

The real letdown was the poorly trained waiters. Constant attempts to remove plates before both at the table were finished and removing wine glasses before the glass was empty. This was not just one waiter but is clearly a way of doing things by all staff. This was about 9 pm so it was not a case of trying to shift stragglers out at the end of the night.

The decor and design is very pleasant and the pianist was just right. I hope they get their act together - particularly with regard to training the waiting staff - because it has the potential to be a wonderful restaurant.

Excellent service and wine
The appetizers were more exciting since I eat only fish. Caters to meat lovers.

Following the hype I had greater expectations. The food was a huge let down. My husband and I both chose steak as our main course as the restaurant specialises in this but it tasted of very little, our starter's and pud's were just ok, nothing more. It's a handsome building in a smart side of town buzzing with the energy of the latest new opener, great for celeb spotting. Service is faultless. But for food - didn't do it for us.

Steaks were very good and perfectly cooked. We also ordered the prawn cocktail and mushroom soup to start which were also faultless. I don't know why restaurants like this don't get the service right! We were greeted with a smile and shown straight to our table which was a good start. However, we then had to wait 20 mins before our order was taken. During the meal, we asked for drinks to be refilled 3 times but they never arrived. It wasn't cheap at £75 a head without wine, coffees or deserts but the food was excellent.
