“Just Perfect”
Reviewed 21 April 2014

I stayed here with a friend on Easter weekend, and found it clean, comfortable and good value. The staff we lovely and friendly. Perfectly located for trains, tubes, pubs, cafés and shop. Yes it's a bit shabby and could do with a bit of updating, but it was perfectly fine for the price. Both my friend and I are fairly well travel and have stayed in all kinds of hotels, and we would stay here again.

Over 70 stairs to our dark dingy room..
Every floorboard creaked on the way to an uncomfortable bed, an old curtain just about held up with a length of old netting wire....
The separate toilet was tiny, with no window or extractor, and the separate tiny shower, had a light, the wrong side of the cubicle, so upon pulling across a curtain, it went dark.... THEN... No hot water....
Making our way out after dark was fun, as the stairwell with its fraid carpet was only lit by the eerie green, fire escape sign...
Good luck if you end up here...
We will not meet.....

Not really a hotel, more like a hostel or B&B. "Reception" in the basement. Given our keys and shown to our room by a lovely woman. Shame the room wasn't so lovely. Manky wood chip wallpaper which was marked and walls cracked. Toilet in a cupboard, shower in another. Had to put the kettle on the floor to plug it in. Heating doesn't appear to work in room 3- radiator behind the bed but no temp control or heat from it at any time. Whilst it's run down it was clean upon arrival. Maid took away our wet towels but didn't leave us any clean ones... When I asked for new ones the guy on duty was quite rude and unhelpful- more concerned about when we were checking out and paying (the following day). Ladies serving breakfast were really friendly, sadly no menus so wasn't sure what they had to offer us, but bacon and egg was a safe bet- delish! Would probably spend a bit more on accommodation next time I'm in London- you definitely get what you pay for at the fitzroy! If they just invested a bit more in upgrading it they'd probably get better reviews and more return customers!

Normal service but the room was not terrible.
Cleanliness approximate, the room in poor condition.
In the bathroom the light over the mirror didn't worked.
Very good and easy location at five minutes on the Nothern and Victoria line.
You can leave your luggages after the checkout.

Well, you stop at Fitzroy Hotel because it' central and cheap.
Not for the old guillottine windows,10 years old paint, can't stay open,or falls on your fingers when you don't expect !Same aspect for the bathroom, beds not recent either.
Continuing with minuses : breakfast (hot water with Nescafé) acid orange juice,no fruits, cold milk.
Plusses : friendly people,very quiet location,very quiet rooms,affordable.

Plus points
1. Friendly helpful staff. They speak reasonably good English. The ladies preparing breakfast in the kitchen were talking to each other in Portuguese, yet served up my cooked breakfast with a smile.
2. This is an old Georgian building that has been converted into a 'multiple occupation' type property. This means that rooms are generously proportioned and well heated, but the bathrooms are on the cosy side. I was in the front room seen in the tripadvisor picture. This room had two singles and one double in it. The adjoining en-suite had a metal enclosure round the shower, a good size sink and working toilet. The ablutions were clean.
3. The dining room in the basement was warm and inviting and I enjoyed my cooked breakfast. There were clear signs about checkout times and breakfast timings. I was able to enjoy a leisurely lie in and checkout was at 1030hrs. If you've forgotten anything, you're just a 3 mins walk from Tottenham Court Road (Boots, Caffe Nero, etc)
4. Fast wifi signal

Room for improvement:
Staying here reminded me of a previous period in my life where I rented for several years in a salubrious part of North London. Even in such an expensive area, it's possible to find the worn down, the forgotten, and the ne-er-do-wells. Fitzroy Hotel is one of those places where, presumably, the rising costs of running such a place mean that corners are cut with regard to comforts. Compared to the shiny and fresh pictures of the hotel on booking.com, it was obvious that, in my room (at least?), the net curtains needed a clean, the latch on the door needed a better screw, the bathroom light switch needed re-wiring/re-attaching, and a bookshelf was in need of its droop being re-aligned. If you can't see the value for money of the place beyond these cosmetic problems, then you should look elsewhere.

So, I'm not with the folk who've given it just 1 out of 5, as I'm one such ex-londoner who's shared his life in London with mousetraps and cash-conscious landlords. My bathroom was spotless and my room and bed comfortable and warm, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. But advancing expectations of something better (as in the pictures on booking.com) is a little disingenuous. Improve the fixtures and fitting and you might just be able to call this residence a hotel.

Room Tip: Try these folks if you have a last minute booking to make.
