This rental to the rear of a private house is clean, well-furnished and quiet. The owner is informative and accommodating. It is easy to get to by train or tube/bus and you can reach nearly all of London in less than an hour with one or two changes. There are several good restaurants within easy walking distance as well as a small deli-grocery within a block. A large supermarket is less than a 30 minute walk away. The train station with frequent service is about a block away and a half block away is a bus stop where you can reach the Picadilly Line tube station in ten minutes. Either way, you can reach central London in a half hour or so.

The only drawback is that the bedroom is up a steep, narrow, open staircase and is under the roof, sort of in the attic where you can stand up only in the center. The queen bed is close to the floor. We, in our early 80s, found the arrangement a bit inconvenient, but not unmanageable. All-in-all, an excellent place to stay for a week or a month for a reasonable price.

“Exquisite cottage in a great location”
Reviewed 11 March 2012 for a stay in March 2012

My parents' stay at The Stables was simply wonderful. I wanted a short relaxing break for my parents in a property away from central London and The Stables fit the bill perfectly!
The owner Nina Anstee was extremely prompt, accommodating and helpful in correspondence.
The location, Winchmore Hill, couldn't have been better. At about 20-25 mins from central London (very convenient rail/underground access), it is perfect for exploring central London and outer areas, close to all the London attractions but a hideout far removed from the noise, pollution and hustle-bustle of central London. Winchmore Hill is beautiful and very posh and Groveland's Park is very close to The Stables. Winchmore Hill train station is not more than a 2-minute walk from The Stables.
As for the cottage itself, exquisite! It's nothing short of a time capsule that immediately transports you back in time. It's a delight for those of us used to modern housing. It's neat, clean, well-maintained, attractive and most importantly- quirky! There is a ground floor with a sturdy wooden ladder leading to a loft which has an ample double bed. Having said that, the cottage does not lack any of the modern and essential conveniences. The bathroom is clean, spacious and up-to-date, as is the kitchen.
Nina's own house and The Stables cottage are both within the same compound and benefit from a beautiful garden (presumably in full bloom in spring/summer but we visited in very late winter/very early spring). This also means that Nina makes herself readily available in case of any queries or requirements.
The Stables sleeps two people and is quiet and extremely safe.
All in all, my parents had an excellent and very memorable stay. I certainly intend to go back to The Stables or Nina's other property at some point to take advantage of her gracious hospitality. The Stables would be perfect as a romantic getaway for two or for short breaks for two friends. My parents are in their 50s and found no trouble at all in negotiating the ladder. It is, however, likely to pose problems for people with physical disabilities.
I would highly recommend The Stables.
