My girlfriend and I recently stayed at St. Ermin's for three nights in late October and had a delightful stay. We are somewhat budget travellers that occassionally splurge. We agonized over finding a hotel in London and spent a number of hours searching online and with some great rates and a supurb location, we settled on St. Ermin's.
Having taken the 'Chunnel' train from Paris into London our cab took us to St. Ermin's and the hotel makes a great first impression. Its quite evident that a recent renovation has taken place. The courtyard driveway is beautiful and the lobby is very nicely appointed. It should be noted the immediate area around the hotel is really a business area but the location is a 10 minute walk to Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, and some major sites. A tube stop is just around the corner from the hotel.
The room itself was quite nice with a very comfortable bed with high thread count sheets and bedding. The room was not huge (think NYC size) but having been to London previously, we knew what to expect. The room had a nice flatscreen TV and well appointed bathroom, a closet, an area to brew your own coffee or tea and a desk area to set-up a laptop. A downside here is there is no free wifi here and you must pay for wireless.
If there was a downside to our room is the window overlooked an ugly building and alley nearby and also painting and renovation seemed to be ongoing on our floor. Also, the supply closet for the maids was right next to our room door and early each morning we would awaken to the maids getting ready for their work day and opening and closing (and sometimes slamming) the door to this closet. Given my booking was through hotels.com I wondered if our booking was given lower priority to a floor that was still under renovation.
The hotel has a lovely bar where we had a drink but did not try the restaurant option, but it looked quite nice. The hotel concierage was helpful in giving us directions to some sites and directions on the Tube. Also, Juan was helpful in getting a poster delivered to the U.S. for us, which we appreciated.
Overall, this is great hotel and if the rates remain at affordable levels, this is a tremendous value. It does appear some minor kinks are being worked out with what I presume is a recent and perhaps ongoing renovation - but this is a hotel with a lot charm. I would stay here again.
