“Disappointing”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

Had never sampled this place before, but had high hopes as the menu seemed innovative. However the masala fried soft shell crab was more of a damp squib than a cracker off the specials menu. The mixed grill was only OK though portion size was generous. Service was unimpressive and lacklustre.
£30+ per head for an average meal including a couple of draft pints of cobra seems pricey, though not every Indian restaurant offers this option.

I won't rush back as for this price in NW6 one can do better.

“Good quality indian food”
Reviewed 27 May 2014

Being of indian origin i am very fussy about indian takeouts and rarely try them, although i must say i was impressed with the food from Guglee. We tried the prawn starters which were decent (and no doubt better in the restaurant when fresh off the grill) and the restaurant special curry which was very good - void of the usual large pieces of peppers and spicies floating around in the sauce that's normally found in most indian take outs. the food has an authentic and home cooked quality about it. Will definately consider dining in next time.

“Feel lucky to have this as a local restaurant”
Reviewed 21 May 2014

I love Guglee. I was looking online to see if there was any news about their new terrace in West Hampstead opening, when I saw all these bad reviews and felt the need to share my experiences. I order from Guglee or eat-in once or twice a month. It is by far one of my favourite restaurants in the area, for a few reasons:

Firstly, the food is fantastic. Saying this, some dishes are better than others. The tikka masala is not the best I've had, but we always get the butter chicken, which is similar, but less 'tomato-y' and we love it. Also, the lamb shank roganjosh and the Indian railway lamb curry are excellent.

Our favourite starter (when in the restaurant) is Ajwain and Dill Grilled Jhinga, definitely worth the price for the huge spicy juicy prawns. We have never had this take away. The seehk kebab both take away and in the restaurant is great.

I also love the okra masala (not as oily as many others) and the makhni dal (just as buttery and creamy as others). Also, the coconut chili chutney with the poppadums is delicious.

The last time we were there, the pani puri wasn't stellar. But we usually get the aloo chaat which we love for the creamy, sweet, sour, potato-y denseness.

Secondly, they have Cobra on tap. And last time we were there for a friend's birthday, we had an India wine that was different, but interesting. We would probably stick to more prominent wine making regions in the future, but it was something interesting to try.

Thirdly, regarding the service:
Takeaway: it is one of the best. It is easy to place an order and the delivery is always within the time they quote you. The quality of the food in our experience has been just as good as the restaurant (though sometimes the grills can loose a tiny bit of crispiness from the the steam in the containers). That aside, it is far superior to any other curry we have ordered in the neighbourhood (including Tiffin Tin).

Restaurant: when it the restaurant is very busy, sometimes you can be left waiting a few minutes for your drink order to be taken once seated or if you say you need 2 more minutes to decide it might be more like 10. But everyone there is very friendly and on a non-weekend, the service is of a very good standard. We have actually never had a complaint.

Basically, in sum, the food is delicious and a lot more sophisticated than many other Indian food restaurants in the area. It is a nice place to go with friends or in a couple when you don't want to eat at one of the five Italian restaurants in the area.

Finally, as I was having brunch at the Alice House a couple of weekends ago, I watched the builders putting up the terrace behind Guglee, and can't wait to sit outside and order some of their grills over a bottle of wine this summer!
