“Enjoyable stay/good location”
Reviewed 3 December 2013

Slightly slow check in alleviated by very pleasant, helpful staff which was matched throughout the hotel. Comfortable clean room. Excellent dinner in cucina asellina, breakfast ok. All in all an enjoyable stay in a good location, will visit again.

Well... What a surprise! I had no expectations about this hotel as my husband had booked it! I don't think it is easy to articulate the uniqueness of this hotel.

The architecture inside is stunning. The reception is on the first floor.. Took a bit if finding as not well signed. The reception area is striking... It is a huge pyramid atrium which extends right to the roof with a glass prism. We were welcomed with a glass of prosecco, lovely! The service was excellent and the reception staff could not have been more welcoming (which is lovely for a 5* as sometimes this isn't the case). Our room wasn't actually ready until 5pm...Which is a bit of a shame. When the rooms are as costly as they are you want to get your money's worth!

The furnishings throughout the hotel are of a very high quality, beautiful carpets and funky wall coverings throughout.

The rooms are as you'd expect, lovely, funky, luxury, interesting layout with lots of gadgets! They aren't massive rooms, but a lot of thought has gone into the layout. Gorgeous rain show. Very comfortable, large bed with such soft sheets! Nespresso machine with cup and saucer! Lights you control with a touchpad next to the bed. We had a little balcony with incredible views over Somerset house and the Thames. The double glazing was amazing was you couldn't hear any noise from outside.

Another slight downside was the lifts to the radio bar. You have to use a separate lift to get up to the bar, only accessible from the ground floor. So we had to go all the way down, get out a lift, wait for a lift to the bar and go all the way up to the top. When you get up there it is a funky place for a cocktail and to people watch. Also, there were no tables at all, and little space at the bar, so you def need to reserve a table. The views from the bar are incredible, especially at night.

The only reason I have given this hotel 4 stars, rather than 5, is that the hotel is very expensive. When you charge these prices (without breakfast) your expectations are very high and you are looking for perfection... The ME came very close :)

Hello Sian H,

Who doesn’t love a good surprise!

We think it’s perfect that you came to visit us unsure of what to expect. Even though we could write many descriptions of our venues, amenities and rooms; it’s the experience of what we refer to as the AURA that truly envelops your being and takes it to a whole new level.

We apologise sincerely for your room not being promised and as you rightly said we want you to get full value for your money and we endeavour to make every check-in as smooth and efficient as humanly possible.

It’s amazing to read that all the suspense built was blown away by our rooms; a lot of thought did go into every detail of your room and we’re always open to suggestions from our guests as to what they think we should probably do to make the experience even if just a little bit better.

We always recommend that our pre-book for our venues, especially on the weekends as they are quite popular. We do operate entry via a separate lift purely for security reasons to ensure that access to the guest floors is for guests only.

We do want you to come back again; it’s always great to see a familiar face!

Warmest Regards.

As a supposed 5 star hotel it needs to live up to its high prices. For me it did not make it, probably needs a good rather than average score but certainly not very good. So many irritations. Guaranteed check in at 3pm became 3.45pm, no wonder they need to give everyone a glass of champagne. Internet disconnected in my room every few minutes, leaking sink, doors close with a loud bank, clock not set to the correct time in the room, annoying lift service, specially when we were down to just one working and I could go on.
The things that worked where good, lovely beds and perfect glazing which meant zero road noise. Architecturally I found it stunning, but for a five star hotel at these prices you need to get the basics perfect, this place falls short.

We stayed here as part of the excellent promotion from AMEX where a free night was offered. We have stayed at the ME hotel in Madrid before which we thought was excellent and was very much looking forward to trying out the recently opened ME London. It is located on Aldwych in Marconi House, a historical building where the first ever BBC broadcast took place in 1922. Based on our stay at ME Madrid and the fact that the hotel is promoted as a five star luxury hotel, our expectations were high. Sadly these expectations were not met in some areas. The hotel seems to have focused so much on gimmicks and trying to be trendy that it forgot to get some of the basics right.

The entrance is at ground level where the concierge desk and a bar are located. You can also access STK restaurant from this level. To reach reception, you walk to the back of the bar and take a lift to the 1st floor (more on the lifts later!). Here there is a small minimalist interior atrium where the reception is located. When we arrived, reception was busy, with about 5 others ahead of us in the queue. Everyone checking in was offered a glass of Prosecco while waiting which was a nice touch.

Our room was on the 2nd floor, we wanted to take the stairs up 1 floor, but we were told the stairs are alarmed and only for use in emergencies, meaning everyone must use the lifts when moving between different floors. There are 3 lifts, but 1 only serves the ground floor and the roof top Radio bar. This leaves 2 lifts to serve 157 rooms; hence there was often a long wait and the lifts were usually crowded. If the stairs had been open, this could have been avoided. The 2 lifts do not serve the 10th floor roof top bar so a visit there requires taking the lift to the ground floor, then taking another lift (guarded by a 90s style bouncer!) back up. It seems that at one stage, the 3 lifts did serve all floors as we noticed that they had blocked off 2 lift entrances on the 10th floor. Another annoyance with lift set-up was the requirement to swipe your key card before selecting the floor number. A few times the lift set off to another floor before we had chance to swipe the card. I understand the need for security, but in many hotels you simply need to place your key card near the reader for it to register, which is much easier.

As others have commented, the lighting in the public areas is extremely dark, to the point that you can’t always see other people just ahead of you. At first we thought there was a fault with the lights, but it seems this is a design “feature”. The room we were allocated was on the small side, but had lovely floor to ceiling windows and a very comfortable bed. The shower room did not have a bath. If you are thinking of staying here for longer than 1 night, I would suggest booking a suite to gain some much needed extra space. The quality of the furnishings we felt was poor: interior doors scraping against the floor, toilet seat broken, painting in the bathroom coming away from the ceiling – it didn’t feel that the hotel was just 1 year old. The rooms were effectively sound proofed from the outside traffic noise - however, it didn’t stop the music from the hotel bar reaching the room through the night until the early hours. The hotel amenities were from the Greek company Apivita which uses mainly natural ingredients and were of a high quality.

We found the service at the hotel to be average, certainly not up to 5 star standards and not as good as the ME Madrid. Since the rooms did not have an iron, we asked for one to be sent, but after 1 hour it still had not arrived so we asked again and it was eventually sent. There is some strong competition to the ME in the immediate vicinity of the hotel (Savoy, Waldorf Hilton, One Aldwych) so they really need to up their game to merit their 5 stars.

This is a Spanish hotel chain with many Spanish staff. In the reception particularly, we noticed that the receptionists would often speak between themselves in Spanish, including whilst they were serving customers which I found slightly rude as it gave the impression that you did not have their full attention (maybe that explains the forgetting of the iron).

The hotel has a small 24 hour gym in the basement which is not staffed and accessed with your room key. There are 4 cardio vascular machines, 2 weights stations, free weights, towels and water. It would accommodate about 6-7 people maximum at a time. When we visited the music feature was not working so bring your own MP3 player. There is no spa at the hotel but concierge can arrange to have someone come to your room to carry out massage and beauty treatments for a flat rate of around £175 per hour. This service is available 24 hours a day, although higher rates apply at night time.

The location of the hotel is excellent. For those who don’t know this area of London, the hotel is a short walk from Covent Garden, several theatres, Trafalgar Square, Somerset House, Waterloo Bridge, South Bank, Victoria Embankment, many pubs, restaurants of all kinds, bars and shops. The following tube & train stations are nearby: Temple (500 yards, Circle and District Lines), Covent Garden (700 yards, Piccadilly Line), Holborn (0.5 miles, Central & Piccadilly Lines), Embankment (0.5 miles, Bakerloo, Circle, District & Northern Lines), Charing Cross Station (700 yards), Waterloo Station (0.5 miles), Kings Cross / St. Pancras (1.5 miles) and London Bridge (2 miles).

In summary, we were very grateful for the generous free night offer from the hotel and AMEX but, if staying in this area again I think we would go back to the Savoy until the ME improves.

Value score was based on the published rate of £330 a night.

Room Tip: Worth upgrading to suite if you are staying for more than a night or 2 as standard rooms are on the...

Hello The_Loggia,

After reading this review, we cannot apologise enough that your stay with us did not exceed your expectations. Yes, ME London is a very different 5* London hotel. We’re unique, dynamic, stylish and cater to a similar clientele. This is not to say, however, that we don’t have universal appeal and we’re investigating as to why your experience with us was not satisfactory. Please do not dismiss us just yet. Your feedback has been taken seriously and we would love to welcome you back to assure you that your first experience was an isolated one.

me and my girlfriend stayed at the me hotel last week for a couple of nights, we went there for my girlfriends 21st birthday. Staff were so friendly, amazing place to be in, we had champagne on arrival in the very lavish reception which is on the 1st floor, the aroma throughout the hotel is so refreshing... we wanted to take the smell home with us.... The hotel set our room up with fresh flowers, a small cake and a bottle of moet. they also put a little happy birthday message on the mirror for my girlfriend. the hotel upgraded our room as soon as we got their due to being a special occasion. The rooms are perfect, so comfortable. each evening we got back they cleaned our room again, lit candles all over the room and our bed were nicely folded out with robes on each side of the bed. i cannot fault this hotel at all. A must do...is the radio bar, great atmosphere.....all i can say is..... amazing amazing and amazing... defiantly will be returning back here again.

A different hotel in London. New, modern with high quality beds. Rooms vary in size but are neat clean, well distributed. Amenities are high class. Location is great, just in the middle of theatre district, 10 min walk to Picadilly, 5 to Covent Garden. Many restaurants in the area. Roof Bar has one of the best views in London, specially at night. The only negative point is it is too dark in the common areas. Reception area is almost scary in its design. The breakfast is high quality, good choice, good service.
