“Clean and welcoming hotel in central London”
Reviewed 21 March 2011

This has been our second visit at the Macdonald hotel. The room was impeccably clean as was the rest of the hotel. Breakfast was always fresh and promptly served. The location of the hotel is excellent. The bus stops, tube and train stations are just 2 mins walk, yet the area of the hotel is very quiet. You can practically reach all of London without any need to change, even getting to the airport is very convenient from there.
When we entered the hotel we felt welcome and when we asked for an extra pillow we immediately found it in the room.
We will definitely recommend this hotel to family and friends and will stay in it again when we return to London.

I was spending the evening in London, and booked a room here following a great experience during a previous visit - but I don't think I'll be going back again. The room was pretty much the same as the one I got last time, clean enough and perfectly warm; there was no real milk, though, just those nasty packets of coffee creamer, and these do not work in a cup of tea - trust me. Rather more annoying was the fact that I had to wash in the sink in my room and use the loo down the road at McDonalds, because the shared bathroom near my room was full of builder's materials - and when I went down to reception to ask where I could find another bathroom, they'd closed the shutters and gone! At 9:30 p.m! Yes, the place is cheap, but I don't feel that having a bathroom available should be a luxury...

This review has rather baffled us and it has taken us some time to unravel it.

To start with, it was the title that really confused us. "A building site" The only maintance work we had been doing at the time of the review was redecorating the breakfast room. This did not effect the guests accomodation areas and the works were carried out very descreetly. So we do not understand why the reviewer called us a building site??? We have NOT had any of our bathrooms closed to store "builder's materials". It is possible that the reviewer mistook the store room which we use to keep tools etc.as the bathroom.

For the 13, shared-bathroom, rooms there are 5 toilets and 6 showers. For two of these rooms the nearest toilet is a floor up. It is possible that the reviewer had one of these rooms. When checking-in a guest, we usually mention this, it is possible in this case we did not. However, the reception is open between 7 am and 2 am (and there is somebody available 24 hours). We do close the shutters when the reception is unattended. This does not mean that there was nobody to give assistence. There is a bell push on top of the reception counter and next to it there is a sign "when reception is unattended please ring bell for attention". Just because the shutter is closed does not mean we have gone. Had you rung the bell at reception or at the front door somebody would have come round to your atttention.

Obviously, We are pleased with the positive comments and have learnt that we need to ensure that there are adequate signs for guests to find the bathrooms etc without having to request directions. However we feel had the reviewer not come to pre-mature conclusions (nobody available - no toilets available), the reviewer would have had a far better stay. In most cases, negative reviews arise because guests do not bring to our attention any problems that may have arisen. Usually, these problems can be easily resolved.

My teenage daughters and I stayed here for 4 nights, in the family room, with ensuite, next to the dining room. The room had a single bed, a double bed and bunkbeds large enough to accomodate two tall teenagers and a wardrobe big enough for all our luggage. There was also a tv and tea & coffee making facilities in the room. The ensuite was a little dated but served its purpose. The hotel is in a great location, just 5 minutes walk to Kings Cross/St Pancras stations and we didn't feel threatened or hesitant in walking to and from the station at any time. Hotel staff were very welcoming and friendly and the full English breakfast provided set us up for a busy day's sightseeing. We returned to the hotel each night, through the snow, at around 9 -9:30pm and found the beds comfortable and the room warm! We would definitely stay here again and I would recommend this hotel to families looking for value for money and a great location.

We stayed at this B&B on the basis of the good reviews that it's received to date. OK I agree the prices are good, the location is alright and it's clean....that's about it!!
Now for the bad points:
1. The bed was TINY, Very much doubt is was even a double, the pillows overlapped the edge of the bed. It was also rock hard, I bet Fred Flintstone has a softer bed! The pillows were also wafer thin, I had to double mine up to get decent enough support.
2. The room was also tiny, if it wasn't for the high ceilings it would have felt like a box room. The whole place felt cramped, they seem to have tried to squeeze in as many rooms as they possibly can, I'm surprised they didn't actually opt for bunk beds in all the room to make them even smaller! There's just about enough room to get around the bed. The 'en-suite' is also tiny, the loo has had to be installed at a wonky angle as the hand basin is in the way! If you're of a generous girth you wouldn't be able to even use it.
3. The service is nowhere near good!! I've no idea who the other reviewers dealt with but the chap on reception barely said 2 words to us, and gave us no information at all. The other chap when we checked out was just as bad, continued to talk on his mobile whilst checking us out. The Breakfast staff were equally unenthusiastic.
4. The curtain was paper thin and let in the bright light from the streetlamp.
5. The room (and the whole hotel) is very tired and dated, serious revamp needed!
6. We were given 1 small towel each, and i wouldn't call them bath towels. There were no hand towels.
7. There was no plug for the basin. The shower looked very drab and neither of us fancied trying it out! The loo also had a pathetic ancient flush mechanism that required several attempts to get it to flush.
8. We could hear everything the people in the room above were doing, moving about, using their en-suite etc.
9. The TV was also tiny, and the top of the wardrobe is in the way when you try to watch from bed.
10. There was no milk with the tea & coffee facilities.
11. The breakfast was just about OK, but very very limited! We were greated by someone who seemed to have little English and all she asked was 'tea/coffee?" and "english breakfast?" no mention of cereals or alternatives and you get given a glass of Orange Juice whether you want it or not. Breakfast itself was hardly a full english (although it was tasty) 1 sausage , 1 piece of bacon, 1 fried egg and a small portion of beans.
All in all I don't think this place is worth it. you'd be much better off in a travelodge or Premier inn and finiding your own breakfast at a local cafe.
