Review of Carlton Hotel
3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 7 Jul 2017via mobile
Stayed at the Carlton Hotel with my parents for one night prior to catching an early Eurostar train. It's right opposite Kings cross train station, with excellent links to Eurostar , train and tube !
Was all we needed for a night, bed shower and adequate plug points to charge phones etc. The rooms are noting special, very basic. I would recommend for anyone needing a place near kings cross for a night. However as a visitor to London this would not be the place to stay.

Breakfast was continental and was good. The only thing was there were dead flies floating in the orange juice , when I pointed it out to the staff they simply picked them out. Pretty gross , makes me wonder what standard the rest of breakfast is made to.

Other than that, is a comfortable bed and fine for a quick nights sleep

I spent a night here in a very basic bijou twin room in the basement. The size of the room for two people was just about do-able although I'm not sure where you would put a suitcase, just as well we were travelling light with only 1 rucksack. The pungent smell when you entered the ground floor was overpowering. It was as though everything had been soaked in peppermint body wash - revolting!! The bedding was clean but the quilt cover was drab and cheap looking. The beds need replacing!!! This was the most uncomfortable bed I've ever had to lie on and with the broken springs digging in and boing-boing sounds every time you twitch a muscle.
A small TV along with coffee and a kettle was provided in the room, although I wouldn't recommend the coffee - it's rank!
The location next to the station has it's advantages but also it's downside. Being in a basement room immediately above the tube line means that the constant rumble of the tubes is extremely loud .
The continental style breakfast was edible, with a choice of tinned fruit, hard boiled eggs, toast, jam and croissants and cereal but the breakfast room was far too small for the number of guests that they were obviously trying to squeeze into this building.
This one definitely isn't on the list to re visit..

I just wanted one night in London prior to a meeting but no budget. I was arriving at Kings Cross and it was literally straight across the road at the Traffic Lights.
The room was very basic, the TV didn't work, the floor was laminate but that's probably most hygienic . The laundry was all clean, breakfast basic but OK. Kettle in the room with a pack of biscuits.
All in all it was OK for the purpose I wanted.

I was unlucky enough to have a 2.00 a.m. 'pacer' next door to me, who came back in the wee small hours, slammed his (her?) door, which woke me up, and then proceeded to walk up and down instead of just getting into bed in a timely manner. There is no carpet in the bedrooms so any sound is magnified further. I mentioned it my first morning at Reception but there didn't seem anything that could be done - I nearly went downstairs to ask a staff member to bang on the door of my neighbour's room the second night, the pacing went on so long. I turned the telly on instead (on mute, as I try to be thoughtful even if others aren't) to watch the election results. On the plus side - King's Cross is just over the road, breakfast is OK, and the staff are pleasant. I have said before, in other reviews, that it would be nice to have a 'good' ratings option on Trip Advisor - that is what I would have given this hotel. I can't say 'very good' as the room, though clean, was small, the en-suite even smaller, and there was an occasional waft of smelly drain from the plughole of the en-suite basin.

Room tip: I had a top floor room but it didn't help with the internal noise situation.

I have recently spent 2 nights at this hotel. After reading the reviews I requested an annexe as this suggested a quieter spot away from the main Euston Road. This was a few doors down from the main hotel and at first I felt a bit isolated but was reassured by Reception that it would be fine and they had CCTV so they could see who was coming and going. I slept very well. The room was small and basic, but clean apart from the showerhead. I mentioned this to Reception and on my return a new one had been fitted! The room was cleaned and fresh towels left even though I was only there for 2 nights. The breakfast was basic but it is a budget hotel. I found staff very friendly and helpful and would stay here again as the location was perfect, literally across the road from Kings Cross Station.

I would absolutely advise against booking this hotel. Was like a scene from a bad movie with associated odours and manners from front desk staff. I asked for a refund and was offered another room as a replacement, which I couldn't respond quick enough with a big fat NO!

I couldn't leave quick enough after being there a full 10 minutes.
