“Great location... too hot inside! ”
Reviewed 14 August 2014 via mobile

The hotel is in a great location, close to the Cutty Sara, Royal Maritime Museum and Observatory. It is a close Clipper trip to the Emirates cable car and offers all the usual amenities.

The only 2 issues are the excessive heat within the building, which even though you are provided with a fan the inability to open the window more than an inch is a problem. In addition if you get to breakfast at the wrong time you get stale fried eggs, sausage, bacon, etc.

The price is reasonable but there are much nicer places locally to eat. We would stay here again but would ensure the room is facing the Cutty Sark to avoid being woken at 4am by the laundry and refuse trucks.

Dear Spanner73,

Thank you very much for your review.

We are looking into how to improve the breakfast service to avoid the mentiopned issue. Portion control is the key here for us. We have also spoken to the suppliers, that they have to stick to the given times for deliveries/collections to avoid further issues as highlighted. I am sorry that this has effected your stay with us.

Once again thanks for your feedback and hopefully we are able to welcome you back to show the improvements.

Kind regards,

Tim Gehrke

Be warned - the beautiful picture is the FRONT of the hotel, whereas guests enter the 'tradesman's' entrance round the back! We found check-in quite confusing. It appeared that all the receptionists were trying to attend to all the guests at the same time and we were unsure exactly who was booking us in. We had booked a room through 'LateRooms', only to be told that a credit card charge would be added. This was not advertised and, considering we had paid £142.03 for one night's B & B, hardly fair.
Our room was quiet, if you view the picture you'll see why! The room was a fairly basic hotel bedroom, again the photos will give you an idea. The hotel itself is in a great location, a short walk from the train station and close to all the Greenwich has to offer. The breakfast was good and, as other reviewers have mentioned, worth purchasing just to experience the restaurant manager - what a character! He was great and really made a difference to our stay.
In short, an average hotel in a great location with no glaring faults. Would stay again as I love Greenwich.

Room Tip: Quiet as the grave!

Devonport House is in a great location in the centre of Greenwich and it has on site parking. We have stayed before but this is the first time we have had meals as well. We had a db&b 1 night package for £109 which is good value. Free wifi which worked very well. Our room was clean and comfortable, huge bathroom with toiletries provided. The room was clearly adapted for a wheelchair user with items such as waist high sockets & grab rails in the bathroom (we hadn't requested this, it just happened to be what we were given) but very bizarrely the shower was over the bath rendering it unsuitable for a wheelchair user!
Dinner was ok and could have been excellent for the sake of lack of attention to detail. It was a shame that the waitress began by giving us a long list of menu items that weren't available. The white wine wasn't chilled enough, and courses described as in a bag or basket were served on plates. Some items were missing: we asked for the shortbread biscuit to go with the creme brûlée and were served a digestive clearly from a packet. The chutney with the cheese was exactly the same as the ketchup with the chicken & chips. The mousse was liquid. All these details added up to a disappointing meal which was a shame because many elements were really well cooked (lovely moist chicken and perfectly cooked fish). Breakfast was a buffet and very ordinary, we had it as part of the package but I certainly wouldn't pay £8.95, especially when there are some great places just round the corner.
Service was overall good but we felt that the waiting staff were struggling due to the absence of a maître d'hôtel overseeing service. Two individuals popped in but there was no-one there all the time.
Due to the location we would probably stay again but would definitely choose room only in future.

Room Tip: Go to Heap's sausages or Jamie Oliver's for breakfast!

Having stayed at this hotel quite a few times we were sadly disappointed by our recent experience. Previously the "contemporary" rooms that we have been allocated have made for a comfortable stay. However, on our recent visit we were initially allocated a room on the third floor - too small to acces both sides of the double bed and windows too high to look through. The helpful receptionist showed us a variety of third floor rooms - all just the same! She then checked with management and came up with a first floor alternative - much better size but overlloking the courtyard used as an overspill area for the bar. Late night noise level for both nights that we stayed made for a poor experience - as did lack of a working bathroom extractor / blown lightbulbs / no extra pillows / etc. Having booked the two rooms that we used 4 months in advance at full rate a most disappointing experience - we will not be using De Vere hotels in the future, and advise others to beware - they promise more than they are able to deliver!

Room Tip: "Contemporary" rooms on lower floors overlooking the main road are good. However rooms all...

Hello H I,
Thank you very much for your feedback.

We have shared this with our teams and have will be changing some of the working procedures to avoid a repeat. Sadly as much as we check all our rooms daily, there can always be something breaking down like the mentioned light bulb. We can not get a warning for those things and aim to get them fixed in the fastest manor once highlighted.

I am sad to read that you feel so strongly about returning to a De Vere Venue in the future. Hopefully you reflect on your better experience the last time round and give us a chance to proof we have taken your feedback serious.

Kind regards,

Tim Gehrke

Stayed here after a weding reception in the same place. The wedding breakfast was very good and the service 1st class. The bedroom was not so good. It was so hot with no air con and with the window open the noise from the traffic was a real problem. I finally fell asleep at 3 am. Breakfast was very good and the price for central London was acceptable. This is De Vere Venues location.

I am a regular guest here as I use the hotel as a business base. There are great offers to be had on their website and the booking staff have a great knowledge of their clientele and their needs.

The restaurant staff are superb, well managed and efficient. There is a real sense of teamwork here and goodwill which extends to the bar staff and reception team.

The rooms all have their individual plus points in my experience, and the level of cleanliness is extremely high.

The Internet cafe and bar are well stocked with fresh coffees, snacks and teas, all of which are complimentary to guests. The parking charge is extremely reasonable too.

Overall these added extras make this venue extremely attractive to business users.

Stayed here for two nights around a family wedding close by. Easy to reach by London Underground and the DLR which I had never been on and was fabulous at night going through Canary Wharf and the high rise buildings. Greenwich has a great feel, village atmosphere and great pubs and eateries close by and the Greenwich market well worth a visit. There is parking available if required. The hotel was not quite as plush as it appeared when booking and for the price, I was a little disappointed but the room was adequate, although small and therefore a little warm and also found it difficult to put cases out of the way. The bathroom a good size but the corridors were so hot and stuffy. The room had windows that opened thankfully but the downside was that the rear of the hotel backed on to a busy road and traffic noise could be an issue. The front of the hotel I think would be quieter. Breakfast was very good, an excellent range available and all very fresh and well cooked so a real bonus. Restaurant staff were extremely friendly and helpful and quite amusing! All in all not a bad stay and would go back but look for a better deal and a differnt facing room.

Room Tip: Definitely away from the back of the hotel, although a better view of the gardens and could see the...
