We stayed at the CP London City as booked by Rail Tourer (an excellent travel firm) and upon arrival did not know what to expect. The main entrance is sort of round the back, and our transfer coach from Kings X had to squeeze down a narrow street. There is access onto the main drag and to the Tube opposite (more of that later).
First impressions were very good. An efficient check in and friendly staff. Facing the check in desk is the Lobby Bar, which seems to specialise in expensive bottles and coffees, whilst on the way to our room, facing us is the other bar, down some steps. This has table service, draught Czech beer and other options. Again fastidiously clean if limited in ambience. Above the bar is the Chines Cricket Club, which is the peculiar name for the restaurant, where a most enjoyable breakfast is available. Many options appertain, and fried eggs are available on demand as an alternative to the (admittedly) very nice scrambled variety. Coffee good and plentiful.
The lifts to our bedroom are controlled access via the keycard which prevents the great unwashed from attaining the lofty heights of the great and good. Good notion, if a little unsettling at first.
The room is high ceilinged and spacious. Excellent facilities, complimentary waters, complimentary robes, complimentary "sleep sprays" to puff on your pillow, and roll-ons to apply to pressure points. Comfy, comfy, comfy. Super bathroom with wonderful all-in-one glass sink. Oh joy, a deep and meaningful bath-tub. Hmm, could live here for a long time.
Regarding the outside - if you really want to emerge from this womb - when we arrived Blackfriars Tube station was closed for renovations. On our morning of departure it was being opened by that nice Boris Johnson. A splendidly re-done Tude/CrossRail edifice. Saves a lot of walking anyway!
All the above are plus points and would warrant a 5 star from me. Negative points would be the "lost" fried eggs at one breakfast, which were finally brought to the table after languishing sadly in the kitchen for a while; the inclusive service charge on drinks (always suspicious); the very high prices, even by London standards. We got it cheap through Rail Tourer, but just try booking in for two nights over the Diamond Jubilee!
Re the area - fine, unless you want a pint on a Sunday night when it resembles a Saharan wasteland.
Overall, I would be back like a shot, if I could afford it.

Was upgraded to a Club Room on Check-In. Room was 1st class and well furnished. Club Lounge had an excellent selection of drinks and newspapers. As you could have breakfast here, this saved on the £20+ cost for Breakfast which in my opinion is over the top for what is just a buffet breakfast you find in any hotel.
It is aimed at the business market though so you do expect this type of charge but with its proximity to the Underground and the vibrant Smithfield market area, it's also excellent for the Leisure travellers.

Stayed at the CP for a week in April 2012 --

Pros:

-- Proximity to the Blackfriars Tube Station which was a perfect start point for sightseeing and access to the city. I cannot speak enough about how convenient this is and people who are planning to do some heavy sightseeing know what I mean!

-- The hotel is within a nice 20 minute stroll to Big Ben, London Eye, Westminster Abbey and other areas which was perfect as we needed the exercise.

-- The concierge folks were very helpful with directions and even priority tickets to the London Eye which was extremely helpful.

-- The mattresses at the hotel are to DIE FOR! I was having sleeping problems for the past couple of months but during the week I stayed there, I literally had to be dragged out of bed in the morning. I wish one of the mattresses would fit in my bag!

-- There is an abundance of restaurants and cafes and a convenience store within a 3 minute walking distance from the hotel.

-- We had a daily complimentary supply of sparkling and still water and a complimentary plate of chocolate upon check in. A nice touch!

Cons:

-- Virtually none, but if I had to say anything it would be the price of the Internet. My guess is that since the hotel is mainly for business travelers, they want to maximize their profits with people buying Internet access. Not a big deal although I would have appreciated a cheaper opportunity to check my email from my room.

Cheers,

Room Tip: The hotel is really and by really I mean really really close to a nearby office building that you co...

This was a site seeing trip rather than business for a change - which is where i'd accumualted my priorty club award points to have this stay for free.
Turned up early with the wife and two children- not an issue, concierge took our case so we could crack on and get out to the sites. I'd never even thought of asking for a map but he made conversation and took the time to go through the locality and give us some bearings so we knew where we were going.

Room was great, two double beds with the expected luxury from a Crowne Plaza, very clean. Clinically clean in fact.

On the downside, breakfast was unnecessarly expensive, two nights stayed and paid £66 for four of us to have the buffet breakfast each morning. Which was very good but at the end of the day it's a buffet breakfast and that's extortionate.

It was Easter and at check out the lady on reception gave my children an Easter egg each - which really wasn't expected in a business style hotel so I thought that was a really nice touch.

Myself and my boyfriend stayed here for 2 nights over the Easter break (April 2012), and I would have easily stayed another few days. Check in and out was quick and easy and the staff were very friendly and professional.

The room and bathroom were spacious, the bed was really comfy and the shower was great. The bedroom and bathroom were spotless and the bed was made up the next day and towels were also changed.
There were two complementary bottles of water each day and tea/coffee facilities available. There was a mini bar available if you wanted to pay extra.

The room also came with a hair-dryer and iron which can come in very handy.

The location is perfect. You are not right in the city centre, which means you get a great nights sleep but only approx 20 mins walk or less from the main attractions. If you are not into walking the tube station is across the road which will take you to all the main attractions.
Overall great hotel in a great location. I would recommend to a friend

My wife and I stayed at this hotel for one night as we went to a theatre that same evening.
When we checked in we asked for a quiet room and were given room 712 on the club floor. No view as it overlooked offices but very quiet which is what we like.
We are priority club members (Ambassador level) and could not fault anything about our stay.
We had access to the club lounge where we could go at any time where in the evening we could enjoy drinks and canapes .
Breakfast in the club lounge was a little disorganised due to lack of staff.
It is a good place to stay in London as it cost just £10.00 in a Black Taxi to get to theatreland in the west end little more than using the underground tube system.
We would definitely stay there again due to its locality and friendly staff.

My companion and I booked into the Crowne Plaza because of its proximity to St Paul's Cathedral where we were attending a Royal Occasion.

The area around the hotel is not exactly your tourist area, full of nightlife and attractions. But this hotel was simply wonderful.

The rooms were well furnished and had many little extras....good "real" coffee for example, complementary chocolates and cookies, and a sleep aromatherapy kit which was put to good use after a long flight from Singapore...and it really works!
The club lounge was small but well stocked. I have not seen a complementary bar anywhere else which has, as well as the usual wines and spirits, a wide selection of liqueurs for guests.

The staff were well trained and very friendly without being familiar. A special thanks must go to the Head Concierge, Jay, who went out of his way to assist my companion to find a suitable hat to wear for the occasion. He was simply great.

Room Tip: avoid rooms looking over a central courtyard.
