I'm used to IHG Group hospitality and this hotel did it really well. Before going further I must state my interest that I'm a Platinum member so would hope to be treated well but my expectations were surpassed.

Geography first, the hotel location is great being immediately opposite Blackfriars tube, fifteen minute walk to Tate Modern and much else of what the South Bank offers and a £10 cab ride to Covent Garden.

Staff training or the recruitment policy within IHG must be something special. Often hotel staff are 'friendly' only because they're told to be but most IHG staff I've met come across that they really care that you enjoy your stay and the staff here excelled. Check in was warm, all the staff said "hello" and "enjoy your stay" even some clearly off duty staff, in the lift, wished us a nice stay.

Our (upgraded) room was great, spacious by London standards, really fitted and spotlessly clean. We didn't really take full advantage of the hotel facilities as we had pre-booked to go out to dinner that night and were only staying for 24 hours although thinking back I wish we'd been able to stay longer.

This hotel is definitely a 'keeper' so I hope to be back soon. Thanks!

My wife and I spent the weekend in London at the Crowne Plaza- the city. Excellent location as its 3 stops from the tower of london and 3 stops from Westminster. Very central location with a great pub across the street. Blackfriars station is right across the street as well. We didnt eat at the hotel but we found it quite clean and quiet. Would recommend the hotel to people looking for a few nights stay in a solid location.

Just returned from a 3 night stay at this hotel. On the positive side was the brilliant location of this hotel with it being very close to Blackfriars tube station and St Paul's with a wide variety of restaurants near by, and in the main the quality of the staff at the front desk. On the downside was being put in a "disabled" equipped room on the first night (having arrived at 11:30pm), but quickly changed the next day, and the fact that the breakfast was very busy on the Saturday, and being told on the Friday breakfast that they didn't do fried eggs (simply not true as show on the Saturday and Sunday breakfasts!). Would I go back - the answer is "Probably Yes".

We booked this via Secret Rooms for 2 nights and got it at a fantastic price. A beautiful hotel, spotlessly clean and very helpful staff. Before arriving we e.mailed to ask for a room facing onto the front of the hotel , which was no problem . We were given a lovely spacious room(free upgrade ), very comfortable bed and large bathroom. We chose not to dine in the hotel as it was a bit expensive , although we did have a few nightcaps there and didnt find it too expensive . Really handy for the tube Blackfriars directly opposite.
The pub opposite "The Blackfriars" is a lovely pub with really good food and friendly atmosphere .Ask the staff about the history it is really interesting .Overall a very enjoyable stay and lovely 2 days of sightseeing.

Room Tip: Ask for a room front facing so you are a not looking at an internal wall

I am very aware that many establishments add a service charge to their bills and when this follows a lunch or dinner with good service, I really have no problem at all with this practice. I do, however, have a major problem with an automatic 12.5% being added to my bill when I go to the bar at a hotel and buy a drink. This is what we experienced at the Crown Plaza bar last night. I ordered a bottle of wine costing £24. The bar tender handed me the card machine and the amount shown was £27. I advised that if I chose to leave a tip, I would do so in cash. On returning to our table, my partner checked the payment made for two drinks purchased earlier and this also had 12.5% service charge added.

Though quite small for the size of the hotel, it is a lovely bar area to sit in (the champagne bar was closed on the night we stayed here) so please, Crowne Plaza, stop the practice of taking a tip from your customers - this is not good business!

In terms of rating, hotel is in a great location opposite Blackfriars underground station (the only station with access from both sides of the Thames). Also opposite is an iconic pub called The Blackfriar - worth a visit if only to look at the fabulous decor.

Hotel is clean, warm, comfortable so my 3 stars above balances the above.
