“Home away from home in London”
Reviewed 28 November 2012

I, my wife and our oldest (grown) son spent five days at the Main House, and we now consider it our home away from home in London. We won't consider anywhere else next time we visit. From initial e-mail contact our experience was positive and encouraging, and only improved with the reality of our stay. Caroline and Moa, proprietor and assistant, were friendly, warm and helpful. Both provided excellent tips regarding restaurants, shops and activities. We stayed in the French Suite on the fourth floor that was very comfortable for the three of us. Coffee (or tea) was quietly served on silver service in the morning at the appointed time. When we ventured out, one of them would usually greet us at the foot of the stairs to provide any advice we would like. They genuinely wished us to have a good day. We loved the neighborhood that was safe, fun and interesting. The house itself is in a quiet spot. Around the corner on Westbourne Grove are boutiques, organic food stores, excellent restaurants and pleasant walking. A short block the other way is the heart of Portobello street with its famous weekend market and lovely shops and cafes all week long. One of my favorites was Books for Cooks, a cook book store with test kitchen inside. We rubbed shoulders with young professionals, families, the hip and wealthy and working folks, all blending seamlessly. The walk to Notting Hill Gate was through quiet and beautiful row houses. The Underground lines (particularly the Central line) were convenient and pleasant. Caroline arranged car service to and from Heathrow airport. We really hated to leave our "new" neighborhood. We consider Caroline and Moa as friends and hope to return soon.

Room Tip: The French Suite has a nice sitting room, but if you have trouble with stairs you can stay in one of...

I was privileged to stay at The Main House in November of 2012. I agree that this home is a gem. From the airy rooms, to the comfortable beds and couches, to interesting artwork from around the world, it is a perfect home away from home after a long day sight-seeing in London. Nottinghill has so much to offer. Everything you need is merely steps away. The food is wonderful, the shops are fabulous, and Portobella market is a must see and the bus and tube are so close! Caroline and Moa are wonderful. We enjoyed their company tremendously! They were helpful and went out of their way to make our stay perfect. I highly recommend a stay at The Main House.

The Main House was charming. Two girlfriends from high school and I reunioned there and explored London. It was comfortable, roomy and just what we needed/wanted for our trip. Coffee and tea on silver service every morning started our day. Caroline and Moa were very helpful arranging drivers and answering our questions about the city and what to do. We couldn't have had a better trip and time in London. We enjoyed our time at Main House and the Notting Hill neighborhood!

The Main House is an absolute treasure and my new home away from home in London. I just returned from a week trip with my grandmother, mother and sister and everyone loved the experience of staying at The Main House. Firstly the owner is a class act and beyond helpful and knowledgable, assisting us in coordinating our days and making the best economical choices. The house itself is full of charm and has that cozy England feel. The rooms are abnormally large for London and full of light and the area is full of cafe's and restaurants to fit any mood or time. The 23 bus stops just next to the hotel and the tube is a couple blocks away. This without a doubt is my new home in London whenever do come back.

Room Tip: I love second floor room which had a fireplace, hardwood floors, and an enormous bathroom.

My husband and I stayed for four nights in October, and fell in love with this wonderful place. As others have mentioned, this is a guest house, and not a hotel - which is what makes it particularly charming and memorable. We were warmly welcomed and felt immediately at home. The drivers Caroline and Moa arranged to pick us up and drop us off were helpful and knowledgeable. The hosts were incredibly helpful to us and accommodating before our arrival, and struck the right balance between interesting and unobtrusive during our stay.

Our suite was huge, particularly for London, and very comfortable with lots of conveniences including: large soaker bathtub and lots of very hot water, good wireless internet, a very comfortable sofa, and electrical converters. Decorated with antique furniture and African art, it was an oasis of calm in a busy trip.

The morning service was wonderful. I am very fussy about tea, and it was perfection - very hot and served beautifully.

We walked to many of our destinations, including Hyde Park, and transit was very close. In addition to being hugely convenient, the immediate neighbourhood was fascinating to explore - wonderful antiquing on Portobello Road, interesting English shopping nearby (Reiss, Jigsaw, Smythson, etc), fabulous food at Ottolenghi (see photo) as well as other excellent restaurants within a short walk. One of Jamie Oliver's shops (and cafe) is located just up the road near the local tube station (Notting Hill Gate), which was interesting although a little disappointing.

Thank you for a wonderful stay!

We loved this place. If you enjoy off the beaten track, non touristy, but incredibly interesting neighborhoods, stay here. It is not a typical b and b, but something really special. Caroline and Moa know London because they live here and they have the gift of being very knowledgeable, a bit irreverent, thoughtful about connecting with what their guests may be interested in doing, and just generally great people.

We went swimming in the Lido in Hampstead Heath one day, and then walked along the Thames near Richmond to Kew Gardens another, not exactly what we would have found in our guidebooks, first visit. And with our oyster card ( tube pass) we managed to get everywhere including the airport using fantastic public transportation. The Main House is .4 miles from Ladbroke Grove, the closest stop for the tube. London is beautifully set up for anyone who can read a map and we were able to get to museums, theatre, etc. for a total of 30 pounds each for the week, including in and out of Heathrow, with an oyster card.

The Main House is a block away from Portobello Road in a wonderful, funky, spare, and very spacious home. We had a suite we could easily have lived in, with simple elegant, unfussy antiques, comfortable beds and sofas, and a good supply of hot water. No breakfast which suited us just fine because there is great food to be had around the corner ( with discounts to guests) and while tea and coffee are served in the morning, there are at least five great places for coffee within a five minute walk. This neighborhood has been gentrified and is now rather expensive and posh, but it feels something like Venice CA or the West Village of 20 years ago, still pretty idiosyncratic and quirky with a lot to look at, and of course, a lot to buy, but you won't find any chain stores here. Some blocks are elegant along with the clothes, but there are vintage stores galore in addition to the market. Also, people live here so you can pretend you do too. I managed to go to Portobello Road to look at the antiques market, go grocery shopping, browse at a few independent bookstores, drop off my laundry, buy an antique breadboard, and eat a wonderful breakfast at Gail's, in about an hour, since it was all a block away.

The one not kind review you have probably read came from someone who had different expectations, and much like a previous writer said, it is not for everyone, but if you like what you are reading do stay here. You will have a wonderful feel for a living London that you would not get staying in a hotel on hotel row. But make your plans way ahead of time. This is the kind of place that you should book before you make your plane reservations. It's that great.

I am sitting on the lovely vintage sofa in my room The Main House. Today is our last day in London and our third day here. I can't add much more to the comments already offered. It begins and ends with our new "friends" Caroline and Moa-our fantastic hosts in this special house in Notting Hill. When we arrived, I realized that I had left a sport coat in a hotel 2 hours away. No problem, Moa contacted the other hotel and 24 hours later my jacket was hanging-freshly pressed-in our room. The room's are lovely, quirky, full of charm with the tasteful furniture and beautiful wide plank floors. The bathroom is huge! Our mornings start with coffee served elegantly and promptly at 8. Caroline is there when you need her offering sight seeing tips or ideas on places to dine. Yes, The Main House is a 10 minute walk to the Tubes. But beyond that, why will you stay anywhere else?
