Just recently (April 2013) we stayed at the Main House in the Notting Hill district of London (on the quiet corner of Colville & Lonsdale Roads) for 13 nights. This is a small B&B (5 rooms I think) located in your typical London row house, probably dating to before the turn of the last century. Our room, essentially the entire second floor, was quite huge - one could almost play football in it - and very nicely decorated with antiques and original oil paintings. A concern for many travelers, the private bathroom was also quite large. Caroline Main, the innkeeper, and Chiara, her able assistant, were both the very hearts & souls of good cheer, and were very helpful in every possible way too, with restaurant & shop recommendations, transport info, calling a reliable car service, etc, etc. Tea or coffee was served on a silver service in the room each morning. There is a common fridge where one can store one's own personal stash of drinks & edibles. All in all it was quite a good show, and very reasonably priced. When we are again in London we will most certainly try to book a room here. It's a small place so booking well ahead is essential.
The inn is located at about a 10 minute walk from either the Notting Hill Gate or Ladbroke Grove tube stations. The red double decker London Transport buses - several routes with frequent service to many different parts of the metropolis - stop about a block away. The inn is also a convenient one block walk to the Portobello Rd antique shops and weekend flea market, and also to many, many shops, cafes & restaurants. A discount of 10% at several nearby shops, restaurants & cafes is provided to guests at the Main House.
One piece of advice: this is very much like staying in someone's home. Those travelers used to the standardized amenities and the obsequious concierges & bellhops of the Hiltons, Hyatts & Kempinskis, this will probably not be your cup of tea.

Tea every morning from a silver tea service in a spacious and beautifully/interestingly furnished room was the perfect way to start each day. A great sleep on a comfortable bed and a great shower in a spacious bathroom. However the best part was Caroline's advice every morning as we plotted our travels, decided what to do, and figured out where to eat. Her suggestions were invariably off the beaten path and therefore much more reasonably-priced, relaxed, and enjoyable. As an example, we were looking for something to do one evening and she raved about a small production of the play "Proof". The acting was excellent, we were far away from the tourist-trap theatre-district, and the price was accordingly about one third of the cost of seats along theatre row. Her suggestion of a nearby pub "where the locals go" (The Ladbroke Arms) was similarly successful. We stayed there for five nights and started out every morning in a similar relaxed and well-informed fashion. If you are flying in have Caroline arrange a driver from airport to Main House...it was reasonably priced and easy...the driver was courteous and helpful.

From my first communication with Caroline I knew that The Main House would be my choice of accommodations. A friend and I travelled to London and spent five nights with Caroline staying in the French Suite on the top floor. The Main House allows you the opportunity to feel like a true resident. The French Suite is tastefully decorated and allowed us each to have our own “room” sharing the more than efficient bathroom meeting all our needs.

Once we had our travel plans in place, Caroline arranged for a personal driver to pick us up from Heathrow Airport, which was so worth the small cost. We then returned to the airport via the tube.

Notting Hill is home to Portobello Market. There are many cafes, pubs, restaurants and beautiful building literally in your backyard! Favorites were Daylesford Café – delicious organic foods & spirits all just literally right around the corner; Tom’s; Duke of Wellington – local pub with great beer & food; Bumpkin Restaurant; Walmer Castle Pub – Thai food.

The Main House is a short 10-minute walk to the tube or you can hop on a bus just around the corner. Save time and pre-order a 7-day Travelcard which will pay for itself the first day of your travels and so easy to use. Take advantage of riding the buses to get a glimpse of the city instead of paying for the tour buses.

Kensington Gardens & Hyde Park are right around the corner. The Orangery Tea Room is literally within the gardens - delicious lemon ginger tea! While in Westminster stop in at the Crypt Café at St Martin’s in the Field for lunch. Harrods and Liberty Department Stores are not to be missed – don’t buy just browse! Make sure you beat the crowds to view the Crown Jewels as soon as you enter London Towers and then go back for the tour with a Yeoman. Take the Tate to Tate museum boat ride on the Thames. Make time for a London Walk (www.londonwalks.com) and the theatre – Billy Elliott was my choice and it was speculator.

At the end of the day settle into The Main House and enjoy a most comfortable sleep! Stop in at Tesco’s market on your way to pick up some wine & cheese – there is a guest refrigerator available on the second floor along with brochures, menus etc. Wake up to delicious coffee or tea. Then on your way out remember to stop and talk to your personal tour guide – Caroline who is more than happy to provide you with many helpful and most practical hints.

This was our second visit to The Main House - we returned for a second time as our previous stay was so memorable . The location must be one of the best places to stay in London - its a really special neighbourhood . Everything is literally right on your doorstep from some of the most interesting cafes and restaurants , Portobello road and its market , chic boutiques, hip hangouts and easy access to all areas of London by the nearby tube station and bus service.
The house and its incredibly spacious rooms are all interestingly and stylishly furnished - spotless too. The luxury of a huge bathroom with a deep bathtub and chaise longue is not something you will find in most central London acommodation ! The Main House really does feel as though you have been lucky enough to be given the keys to your friends Notting hill pad - it's that comfortable, welcoming and safe.
Caroline and Chiara were on hand for any queries or questions on all things London - another plus when visiting the city - first hand tips and insider knowledge are invaluable. All our email correspondence with them from our initial booking was prompt, friendly and informative - they genuinely want you to have the best experience possible during your stay.
Whether its your first or fiftieth visit to London - The Main House ticks all the boxes.

Me and my husband had a great six days stay at Caroline's Main House. Felt very welcome and the area was also wonderful. Loved how we became a part of a neighborhood by staying here. Big room and lovely bathroom. Recommended!

I lucked out when I visited this place a year ago (January 2012) and am back now in March 2013. Caroline Main, owner of the house, knows the city very well and always suggests great things to do. The "hotel" itself is completely charming. It's an old Victorian-style house and each guest gets an entire floor. Very cozy, very comfortable. Clean. I didn't even look at other hotels for this trip.

Room Tip: Each floor is unique. I've only seen the 2nd and 4th floors - both were great. No food here but...

We (two adults and one teenage girl) have stayed at Main House twice now, in late 2011 and again in late 2012. All aspects of it are first-rate. Caroline (the owner) and Moa (her longtime assistant) are both delightful, genuinely friendly, and extremely helpful. They are quick to respond to emails inquiring about bookings, and happy to make arrangements for transportation from the airport to the inn. They're also very good about making recommendations for places to eat in the neighborhood. The neighborhood itself is excellent - everything from good, simple breakfast cafes to mid-range to three-star places within easy walking distance, along with excellent shopping and a 10-minute walk to the Underground. The rooms are very comfortable, spacious, and easy to live in - our stays have been about a week, and we've not felt cramped or restless in the least. All in all a great find, a great value, and a great experience.
