I've been here three times over the last 6 months and every time I've been impressed. On the latest visit I had a spanking fresh dressed crab, served very simply in the shell. No mucking around there. I followed up with a couple of slices of gammon. What a difference from the usual 'pub grub' approach. Two lovely slices clearly carved from a gammon joint, moist without leaking liquid everywhere. They were served with an excellent sauce that benefited from just a hint of clove. A pint of well kept Otter was a good accompaniment.
The space is quite big and simply decorated in the style of upmarket 'gastro-pubs' everywhere. Downstairs is a room for feasting which looks very inviting. They're even brave enough to display cuts of dead animal, pre-cooking. Definitely a robust approach to things that I love.
An excellent feature is that I recognised a number of the staff from when I first went, all of them charming. It suggests this place is a) much more than just a pub that serves a bit of food and b) treats its people right. That shows in how they work.
