Imagine being locked in a sweet shop overnight knowing that you could have your fill without gaining a single pound or risking the wrath of your dentist. Now translate that fantasy to the world of mid 20th century and contemporary design and you have CitizenM in Southwark London.

Vitra furnishes the entire hotel! Our room was small but complete, faced North with a view of the Gherkin (if you craned your neck) and was quiet and very comfortable. The king-size bed filled the entire area under the huge window allowing you to recline in bed and enjoy the world going by outside. The shower and toilet occupied a frosted glass cubicle that was lit by coloured LEDs controlled by a Samsung tablet. The same tablet controlled the room lighting, air-conditioning, TV, entertainment, alarm and even (free) Internet access. You could play about with different lighting modes to create different moods or simply annoy your partner while she's in the shower.

The staff were super helpful, lovely and friendly without being overbearing. In such a cool London hotel they could so easily have been snooty.

We returned late to the hotel, ordered cups of tea and then proceeded to try out each and every design classic chair in the lobby, photographing each other like a pair of design tourists. This was a great research opportunity for product designers as we got up close and personal with furniture normally seen only in the design magazines.

CitizenM was more than simply a bed for the night, it was a design experience and at £125 for the night worth every penny.

Stayed here from 5 to 7 oktober. Short trip to London.

First visit of the citizenM hotel chain.

Concept: very modern, luxury hotel designed for young trendy people. This means free skype phone, free wireless internet, free online movies, free online music & a tablet computer to control your room.

Check-in: there are 3 computers ready for you. You have to fill in the online form & to activate yourself your keykard. There is offcourse a staffmember who helps you if needed.

Room: we had room 543, with an outside view on a contruction site. The rooms are very small but very clever made. You have an enormous bed an offcourse the tablet. You can controle everything in your room with this. Lights, television, blinds, internet... Very nice. Never had a bad feeling about the room. We had a perfect nightrest.

services: as said they are focussed on the internet aspect. No gym or swimmingpool. No roomservice.

Breakfast: The price that we paid was 10,95 pound a person. You have english breakfast: eggs, bacon, sausages & tomatoes. Also classic breakfast is available: bread, babybell cheese, jam, nuthella, viennoisserie & orange juice.

couple of remarks here;
- limited selection for an expensive, luxurious hotel
- quality of the croissants, bread an viennoisserie was really bad. It all looks great but is backed with the same sandwich dough / recipe
- there are no instructions how it works. You have to give your roomnumber & you get a cafe in place. But what with the normal refills?
- you also have to clean your own table - self service style

Bar: same place as where you have breakfast. Prices are correct; 2,25 pound for a coffee and 1,50 for a softdrink. Food is also selfservice ( salads, sushi, ben & jerry icecream )

general conclusion; This is not the cheapest hotel. If you like modern rooms & you enjoy using internet & tablets... Well than is this hotel for you! An unique experience.

We liked it but if you pay 240 pound a night you expect a bit more staff. Also when you have breakfast you want to have choice & a bit of comfort ( bring you to your table & dont have to clean the table when you leave ). This is also the reason why we didnt gave it a 5 star rating.

tip; breakfast in london is cheap, allmost everywhere the cost is 4 to 5 pound.

Was interested to experience Citizen M - their branding made it seem very traveller friendly.

This hotel is a no frills yet somewhat stylish, Jackson Pollock meets Ikea hybrid.

The rooms were like Japanese cubicals, with the bed taking up most of the room. The bed was definitely the highlight and one of the most comfortable I have had in a hotel.

I missed the service you get in a good hotel, for example I could not get reception on the phone when I wanted to grab an extra towel.

I would recommend this hotel for business travellers popping into London for a night. It would be great for a touring musician as they have good looking food and a bar open 24-7.

I personally though would not choose to come back here in a hurry.

Room Tip: Standard rooms (I am not sure if there are any other kind) are small and not for people traveling wi...

Great hotel!
We would highly recommend it!
The hotel is new, very modern, with a nice location (close to Tate Modern and the Millenium Bridge). Also close to Southwark tube station.
The bar and lounge area are wonderful. The decor is amazing.
Rooms are small but the bed is very comfortable and the shower is very good.
We stayed for six days and we loved everything about it!

My husband and I have just returned from a nights stay at CitizenM. We stayed in a room overlooking Southwark Street on the fourth floor.
The hotel is a short walk from both Southwark tube station and London Bridge tube station, if you're not great with directions London Bridge is probably the easiest as you just walk about 5 minutes along Southwark Street and your there.
From the moment we walked into the reception area we were met but a very helpful and happy member of staff, who assisted us with the electronic booking in system, explained the concept of CitizenM and directed us to our room.
The rooms although on the smaller size are well equipped, funky and very comfortable.
The room is controlled by a Samsung tablet. My husband was in his element and like the tv remote at home I wasn't aloud near it. You can control the mood lighting, blinds/curtains, heating/air con and tv from the tablet. The room has a wash basin and small fridge as well as an open wardrobe to hang clothese. There is a pod type bathroom with a shower and toilet, all of which was spotless.
The hotel has a 24hr bar and a buffet style food area. We didn't eat there for dinner, instead walked 5 minutes to a yummy tapas place near to London Bridge tube station. We returned later to the bar for a few cocktails and because it was my birthday we were treated to a few free drinks. We relaxed in the lounge area and looked through some of the books.
We paid £10 each for breakfast. This included a buffet style cooked breakfast, cereal, fruit, pastries, tea/coffee and juice.
Not greasy at all!!!!
All in all we had a great time, not in what I would call central london but close enough with a short walk or tube. Great price and I would certainly go back

Very modern, great atmosphere, really helpful staff. Rooms were compact but fabulous.

Great reception area, incorporating loads of emblems of different parts of the world. The books were amazing and the general feel was highly European. We loved it.

We stayed at CitizenM last night for the first time. Our first impression was fantastic and the interior and decoration was modern and artistic. Upon arrival to our room we were keen to explore the tablet which controlled the TV, blinds, air con and lighting. Upon further inspection of the room we discovered that there was hair on the bed, the sink was filthy and blood on the curtain that divided the room. We reported this to reception, who said that house keeping would clean the room whilst we were out. Three hours later we returned to find that our room was still dirty. We called reception again, who reported that housekeeping had checked the room and that the room was not dirty. I requested that they came to our room so that I could show them the problems. We went out out again and upon return this time the room was finally clean.
Overall it was an OK expereince, however I was disappointed that it took 10 hours for the room to be finally sorted and that our comments were not believed. Whatever happened to "The customer is always right". Unfortunately we would not stay at Citizen M again and feel that it is very over priced. We stayed at The Bloc in Birmingham recently, which is based upon the same concept and paid £44 a night for a spotlessy clean room, with the same facilities minus the tablet.

Management response:Responded 8 October 2012

Hi "starlasquirrel",

Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience at citizenM London Bankside.

Although I’m happy you had a great first impression, I apologise we let you down with the cleanliness of the room and lead time taken to solve the issue, detracting from your experience here. The entire hotel and rooms must be sparkling clean at all times and while it should not have happened in the first place, in which I'm again sorry, be sure we are using your observations as we continually look to develop the standards of service that we offer.

Regarding room rates, hotels are priced differently in different cities and markets. While you will find a citizenM hotel in Glasgow with a much lower rate, other factors push hotel prices up in London.

I do hope you will understand that your past experience was an exception not to be repeated, and that you would give us another try in the future. Let us prove to you about our citizenM hospitality.

Wish you safe travels and all the best.
citizenDiego
