“A cracking funky hotel near the Shard”
Reviewed 8 July 2014

Wow,Location location location,if you want a hotel with a difference this is it,very futuristic from check in to the dynamics of the rooms to breakfast,BUT these guys for sure are so friendly and genuine you'll love this place.
Please try it sooooo close to the Borough Market,Golden Hind and the Shard.

Big tip........ You don't need to pay and see the views from the Shard! Go to the 34th floor for a drink instead for a look see photos etc etc,it's free just let security know your going to the bar for a drink and It's FREE.
Enjoy hotel is wonderful explore everything !

Room Tip: Top floor guys

Hi KnowlesyAjk

Glad you loved Bankside. We opened just over 2 years ago in what was a lesser known but none the less vibrant neighbourhood.

We felt it was an intriguing mix of culture, creativity ,big business and residential. With tourist attractions such as The Globe, The Tate Modern and the Millennium Bridge making St Paul's a short stroll, there is plenty to do and see. For the arts there's the National Theatre, Southbank Centre, The Old Vic and BFI not to mention local theatres including The Menier Chocolate Factory, The Southwark Playhouse and the Young Vic.

For foodies, there's Borough Market and the less well known Maltby Street Market on Saturdays. Whilst Gordon Ramsay has recently opened Union Street Cafe and Marc Hix opens his latest Hixster later this month, there are also some great independent places like the Laughing Gravy and Story. Of course you have the Shard too with its bars and restaurants, whilst Bermondsey Street is great for a wander with its restaurants and The White Cube Gallery.

It's also incredibly well connected, with public transport direct to the West End including Covent Garden and Oxford Street, the east for the O2 and Westfield Stratford. Gatwick, City and Luton Airports can all be accessed direct from local stations and Waterloo is just a 15 minute walk away.

But then, having stayed with us, you know all of this so I hope we have the chance to introduce you to Tower Hill when we open next year.

This hotel for me is an absolute gem. You see the cool edgy facade when you approach and you know this is going to be interesting. The lobby is simply marvellous! Modern yet inviting and very comfortable. This is chic European design at its best. The 1st hint at at the hi-tech nature of this hotel is apparent with the banks of check in machines which make checking in quick and hassle free. Thats not to say that you don't get human contact; there are several staff on hand to offer assistance with a smile should you need it. All the rooms are exactly the same, with the only difference being the view from the windows. The rooms themselves are compact but enough room to swing a cat. The beds are massive though and very comfortable. Technology controls the rooms too, with pretty much everything controlled by a nifty tablet. You can change the mood lighting, draw the curtains, control the tv etc. Another nice touch is that movies are included as standard to be watched on the rather huge TV.

Like i said in the title, these rooms aren't for everyone. If you like luxurious rooms with all the touches of a traditional hotel then you would probably be best off looking else where. These rooms are quite utilitarian in design and function. For me it was perfect though. The location on bankside near tower bridge is excellent. The price is very reasonable, and you will get a very nice nights sleep. There is even a cool quirky alarm to wake you up on the TV.

If you are having a romantic getaway i'd goo somewhere else. If you're looking for a place just to lay your head that has bags of personality and oozes cool and trendy then jump in! You wont be disappointed. I sure would stay again

We had a very nice 2 night stay here. Hotel is in a great location. We walked to the Borough Market, the Old Vic and the Hayward Gallery. Lots to do and see round about and so close to the river. We had stayed at CitizenM in Glasgow previously so we knew what to expect - a smallish room with a large (very comfy!) bed and a shower/toilet pod with nice thick towels. There is limited storage space so I'm not sure I would want to stay there for a week but it is ideal for a few days. There is good open space in the lobby with lots of sofas and seats and TV screens so you can relax there if you want drinks or food. We didn't eat in the hotel as there are lots of nice places to eat round about. So all in all, we will definitely go back. Yes it is different from the normal hotel but I think it works well and we would recommend it.

Hi BarbaraAllison88

Great to read about your experience on trip advisor. It's always good to get feedback but especially when it comes from someone that has travelled the world like you - a mobile citizen if ever there was one.

I hope we get the chance to welcome you back to Bankside sometime soon - next time maybe try one of the sandwiches supplied by Gastronomica in Borough Market, served hot, they are unbelievable!!!

Remember you can also find us in New York, Paris, Amsterdam, Glasgow and Rotterdam and with a big roll out strategy under way, maybe you'll find us in some cities you're yet to discover

safe travels

I picked this hotel because of its proximity to the Tate Modern. Situated in the Bankside area, most of London is within 20-30 minutes walking distance. If you are expecting to spend a lot of time in your hotel, and are looking for a home like experience, this is not the place. It works as a hostel like space, specially if you need to rest your head at night. The check in process was smooth and efficient, all electronic. The rooms were meticulously clean, but small. The internet/tv/movies were all free which was quiet cost effective. The lobby downstairs with free computers, and fairly reasonably priced snacks/meals was quiet nice. I enjoyed my stay here.

I am not in the habit of writing bad TripAdvisor reviews and this is more a cautionary tale than anything else. If you are under 25 and looking for something that's one step above a youth hostel, this is for you. If you're a "grown up," if you're traveling for business, if you expect basic hotel amenities, if you are paying more than $200USD/night, CitizenM Bankside is a bad choice in any number of ways. I have stayed in hotels with lovely small rooms. This room is small and someone's idea of "cool" in that the bed takes up 2/3rds of the room and some of the rest is filled with useless padding around the bed. The one drawer is under the bed. There is an open cubicle that passes for a closet. There is nowhere to put toiletries/cosmetics in the bathroom and the lighting is dim. No robe. An "ironing room" on each floor. We were booked for four days and after one, it was obvious we couldn't stay. When we chatted with the manager, it was clear that we weren't the first adults who wanted out. And while they put it on us for "not understanding their concept" (we thought they were a hotel and we do understand that), they nevertheless refunded the rest of our stay and we had the sense that it was hardly the first time this had happened. Their focus on "cool" entirely eliminates the idea of hospitality and frankly, I'd rather stay somewhere that focuses on the guest.

Room Tip: We were in a handicapped room (not requested) which apparently had a far larger bathroom than standa...

Hi Copywolf

Thanks for taking the time to leave your thoughts on Trip Advisor and posting your cautionary note.

citizenM was created as an antidote to the mass market branded hotels where making a reservation is overly complicated, check in is painfully slow, especially when you've just travelled half way round the world and all you want to do is crash in a great bed with crisp linen, where in our digital and connected world you have to pay £20.00 to access the wifi despite paying in excess of £200.00 a night for your room and where the staff want to be anywhere but looking after the guest.

In delivering this, we recognise that we serve a relatively niche, but every growing breed of traveller and that citizenM might not appeal to all. Where a guest finds that citizenM is simply not for them, we understand and will do whatever we can to find them a place that better suits their needs. I am only glad that the team here were able to do this for you.

I'd like to take this opportunity to wish you well in your travels

I chose this hotel only by location which I would like to stay in Southwark area. I was very pleased with my choice. The location was great. I could enjoy renovating Bankside area. In the evening I walked alongside the Thames. In the morning I had a breakfast at the Borough Market. Although the hotel is just in the middle between the London Bridge station and the Southwark station, transportation is absolutely easy. The hotel itself was pretty cool with modern atmosphere. When I entered the room, I was a little surprised that room was small. But soon I accustomed to it. Interestingly, room is controlled by Samsung galaxy pad! The lobby is beautifully decorated with mainly ‘red’. but colorful setting. I was pleased to stay at this hotel and enjoy Southwark.

Stayed for a weekend -with my family- in the warm and cosy citizenM London Bankside.
Warm welcome with a very quick check in and check out system.
A very warm and special thanks to Laetitia. She made our weekend even better!

Liitle tip perhaps: I booked the hotel for 4 rooms. Perhaps find a way in the system that I could checkin in one time instead of putting in the credit card four times? Just a tip, certainly not a negative comment.
