I used to eat at Fryers Delight and Rock & Sole Plaice when I worked in High Holborn. Fryers was better than Rock & Sole. I have also used Masters in Waterloo, Golden Fish up near Mount Pleasant, Golden Hind and the Seashell up by Marylebone station.

Alens is now the best lunch option. Lunch special is very reasonably priced and the fish is beautiful it comes with salad or mushy peas. Tea comes with milk in a separate jug. It is not too busy and the service is very good.Place is nice and clean and pleasant.

In the heart of the city yet with the friendly atmosphere of a small town chipper, Allen's is well worth a visit if you're in the Holborn area. Plenty of room, great service, smiling face's (in London yet) excellent portions. Nothing to complain about.
As I left they undercharged me, significantly, I questioned this and was told that 'the fish wasn't big enough'. As if I noticed. Will revisit again and again...

We only popped in to get some chips but it felt like a solid, local chippy. Hand cut chips and homemade pies suggest that they know what people want and they know how to deliver.

It's nice to find a London chippy that understands that it has to cut potatoes themselves by hand in order to produce the kind of chips that people expect from a chippy!!
