I traveled, along with a coworker, from Mexico to attend a tradeshow at the Excel Centre. We arrived into Gatwick at 6 am and we were at the hotel by about 7 am. We understood our room wouldn't be available until later in the day, but in years past, in other hotels we were able to leave our bags and go out and wander around. At this property we were unable to do that and literally sat in the lobby/restaurant with our based while other guests were eating breakfast. After having been on the road for over 16 hours our inability to actually go somewhere was a problem. Had we been made aware we wouldn't be able to leave our bags we probably would have rented the previous night to have the rooms waiting for us upon our arrival.

For long haul travel I don't usually bring a hair dryer and unfortunately all the loaner dryers were provided to guests who apparantely held on to them until their departure as I could never get one.

Also, I've never stayed in a room without a telephone, simply for safety reasons, should someone try to break in to your room or if your feeling ill, you should be able to call downstairs.

So you ask, why a 4 star, Location, Location, Location. The location was awesome, so convenient to be traveling the DLR in the oppositie direction than the rest of the masses of people arriving at the Excel Centre. Cleanliness was great and staff was very friendly. Breakfast was only so/so, for approx the same cost we had many other choices at the Excel Centre and ate our breakfast there.

Room Tip: Try not to get an end unit by the lighted logo sign, it is very bright into the room.

Staying at this Travelodge was ideal for commuting into London City. Close to the Doclands Light Railway DLR made travel easy. The room was clean and very modern with a very comfortable bed (just what you need after a day in London). Close to both the DLR and London City Airport it's clear soundproofing had been a priority during the hotel build. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast in my opinion was great value, setting you up for the day.

Room Tip: Great place to plan your visit to London from.

Please feel free to come and scratch the paintwork with your suitcases like happens in all other travelodges. At the moment it is all fresh and new. Rooms are much better than the average travelodge, being quiet, spacious and with big picture windows in some rooms (albeit looking out onto what is for the time being wasteland). Short 5 minute walk to the DLR. Staff friendly. Had an early check in for £10 and being stingy wished they had bag storage facilities. Excellent VFM for London. Did not eat there as it was just a place to lay our heads.
Comfortable beds, clean rooms and good transport links for £50 a night - what more can you ask for in London. Might be a bit far out for some, but with a short hop and a cable car ride handy for O2 as well.

Room Tip: All identical I guess, so no point haggling.

Thischotel is suppose to be pet friendly although when we took my dog with us for the night we'd discovered that the staff had gone into our room and removed oyr dog when we were out!
The dog was absolutely traumatised and we then got told that they'd be a £20 charge for a dog which we were not told when booking in.
Staff were extremely rude and this place should be avoided at all costs .

TravelodgeUK, Dianne from Customer Care at Travelodge London Excel Hotel, responded to this reviewResponded 20 November 2013

Whilst we do allow pets in our hotels, customers must not leave dogs unattended. As our hotel staff received a large volume of complaints from various guests regarding the noise from the dog throughout the evening, our staff felt it was best to take the dog to the staff room where it was well looked after until our customers arrived back to the hotel in the early hours of the morning. Our staff went above and beyond by supplying the dog with food and water and ensuring it was comfortable so noise was kept to a minimum.

Great hotel handy for the Excel and the DLR. A very short walk to a DLR station which allows easy access for traveling. A great price for a clean and comfortable hotel in a good location.Food needs a improve.
