Description: Legendary local in Clerkenwell Green. The Crown Tavern is perfectly placed on the corner of Clerkenwell Green in bustling Farringdon. Take a seat with us and you could be sitting in the spot where Lenin and Stalin held a meeting in 1905. Or you may recognise our distinctive golden "Apollo Lounge" upstairs, where scenes from the British film 'Notes on a Scandal', featuring Dame Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett, were filmed. The lounge - once a renowned concert hall - is spacious and bright, boasting original features and is available to hire for parties and events. This iconic London pub is the ideal spot to enjoy a pint of speciality beer and a plate of carefully sourced, home cooked pub food. And on a summers day you can enjoy this all on our famous terrace in the middle of the picturesque Clerkenwell Green.

My wife and I went twice, once for beers and once for dinner (on Valentine's Day). Dinner was upstairs in the lounge. It was actually pretty quiet, with only a few other couples or groups dining. The food was good, though, and the service very good. We stayed for further beers downstairs after dinner. It was bustling with plenty of interesting groups for people watching. The tavern was very convenient to the Zetter Hotel around the corner.

The gastropub type of food is good and the staff nice, but the atmosphere is not very friendly. Clients are mainly relatively posh youngsters wearing pretty clothes.

Food was really bad (not fresh, bland, salad served hot, chicken served cold).

Decor is nice and a good selection of drinks. I've marked it down as food was atrocious. Good stop if you're not eating.

We booked a table for four and Aoife, kindly looked after us and arranged a table in a quieter part of the pub for our family gathering. Clarissa was charming and very welcoming. Really impressed with the quality of the roasts, very tasty, fresh and ample portions, offering excellent value for money. I don't usually opt for sunday roast in a restaurant as it's normally bland, lacking in flavour and seasoning. The gravy was especially delicious as were the vegetables, so often a limp, overcooked afterthought dumped on the plate but the baby carrots and potatoes were amazing. Unfortunately for me, they had ran out of pork so I opted for the chicken instead, two large legs and delicious! Two of my guests ordered the nut roast, again, this dish is often a pathetic veggie option cooked without care or experience but this one was one of the best dishes of the evening, full of flavour and nuts, very impressed! It takes a real chef to make a nut roast. The desserts were very very good, we shared one designed for sharing so we had a little portion of three cakes, clotted cream and sorbets, delicious! My sister, celebrating her birthday was presented with sticky toffee pudding, homemade and one of the best I've tasted and the lovely chef kindly added a happy birthday message, candle and presented it to my sister, sincerely wishing her a happy birthday which made her day. On the negative side, the waiting staff need to be allocated tables and diners to look after as they were busy on the front bar and we waited a long time for drinks, orders and any further attention after our mains but when service came it was very good indeed. With great food like this, the staff need to turn more of their attention to the diners. I have to mention the place did not smell so sweet as we entered, much like the day after Satuday night in the pub so freshen up please for our next visit!
