“Over-priced hot dogs”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 December 2013

We went in looking for a quick hot snack before a matinee show. So the obvious choice was to try the "famous" hot dogs. So for £4.50 each, we had a hot dog sausage on a cold bun with onions and ketchup/mustard. They were pretty ordinary, and not worth it. The hot chocolate/coffee was nice though. We didn't have time to try the cakes which looked nice. Next time we will stick to coffee and cakes!

“AMAZING”

Went here for breakfast. The Bircher Muesli and tea are not to be missed. Truly a pleasant place to hang out.

“Pleasantly different from the chain coffee shops”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 December 2013

I called in here for a coffee break and enjoyed freshly ground coffee with a delicious pastry served by polite, friendly staff. The environment is lovely - quirky, 1930's style - an old fashioned shop with good service - it is like going back in time. An ideal place to sit and read while enjoying a coffee in lovely surroundings.
Pleasantly different from the chain coffee shops.

“Nice place for coffee, pastries etc.”

Went here with friends for coffee, nice atmosphere and lovely staff. The cakes looked wonderful, I didn't taste one, so can't comment. Lovely environment. Somewhere special for a coffee break.

“Surprisingly poor experience”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 November 2013

I love the Delaunay restaurant - particularly fun to order posh hot dogs in the main restaurant with perfect crispy french fries. My teenage son is on half-term holidays and we decided to have lunch at the Counter as this is convenient to my office and somewhat off the main parent/child tourist pathways around Covent Garden. We'd spent the morning packing up my office and I wanted to give him a slightly grown up treat.

There was a sneaky feeling that no one was in charge - certainly no one was focused on the customer experience. It wasn't clear if there was table service or if anyone was seating people or if we had to order at the counter. After queuing up at the till we found out we had to be seated to order. Then we realised that the couple of empty tables inside had been snatched while we were being orderly and queuing.

The weather was just about okay to sit outside so we did. Only to be tormented by a table of young arty types lingering over a round of coffees and smoking liking chimneys. We gritted our teeth and awaited the waitress.

She finally arrived, thrust menus at us. Despite having the restaurant menu available for take out, the counter menu is extremely limited. Only one hot dog on the menu; with sauerkraut and onions. We ordered two PLAIN hot dogs, a hot chocolate and a coffee. 17 minutes later the coffee and the hot chocolate arrived. The hot chocolate was clearly made from a mix or syrup and had separated in the glass. The coffee was good though. Then the bill came. This was somewhat puzzling as we had no food yet.

A further 5 minutes later (now 22 minutes) two articles of food arrived. We were confronted by two beef frankfurters in buns. Resting on a bed of sauerkraut and smothered in onions. Realising we were on a loser, I promised the boy free roaming in the sweet shop at the cinema, we gritted our teeth and scraped the onions and kraut off the dogs. These turned out to be good quality hot dogs but actually not very warm and the buns were cold (as in not toasted or warmed).

Summing up, my son said 'so we waited 22 minutes for something we didn't order, that was poorly cooked and paid £13.80 for something worth about a fiver'.

I counted out exactly £13.80 in coins (including some 5 pence) and put it on the bill (the only thing that arrived promptly). I told the waitress that it was exact change on purpose and that the service had been poor. She made a perfunctory excuse, took our money and disappeared.

A poor experience. The organisation behind the Delaunay are good at running restaurants and so it was all the more shocking.
