“Southbank Gem”
Reviewed 4 June 2014

Visited this hotel for 2 nights in April and was pleasantly surprised. Blackfriars Road is quite busy, but you couldn't really hear the noise in the room. Our room was lovely, very modern with nice furnishings, comfy bed, nice pillows, excellent shower, i-pod dock and our room looked directly onto the Shard, which was a nice surprise, as one of the reasons for our trip was to go up the Shard. Really very impressed by this hotel, the staff are all very nice and helpful and the breakfast was plentiful and excellent. The location is excellent too - just a five minute walk to the underground for the Jubilee line. Five minutes the other way is the Thames. Tate Modern is only a few minutes walk along the bank and so is the Thames Clipper stop. Will definately stay here again.

Room Tip: Choose a higher floor and you may get a view of the Shard

My other half and I went to this hotel for valentines weekend earlier this year, and we absolutely loved it. We originally only booked the one night, however we enjoyed our time in London so much, we opted to stay the extra night. We booked one of the rooms on the corner of the hotel with the glass window between the bathroom and the bedroom (It does mist at a push of a button) and the view out of the window was simply amazing. Being able to lay in bed with the curtains open and see all the lights of London at night, including the shard, and watch the sunrise and sunset around the room was lovely. The first night there we ended up ordering room service due to getting there so late, and it was lovely. Staff were ever so helpful and the location is very convenient being right near the train station! We would definitely go back!

Room Tip: If going as a couple, the rooms that we went for are amazing, however, if not with your other half...

I wouldn't normally consider staying at a Novotel. Typically they are bland looking, and priced above their value. Not at Novotel London Blackfriars. This hotel's style makes me reconsider my opinion of Novotels.
Never having stayed in Southwark before I was a bit doubtful there would be much of interest near the hotel. However there's a few pubs and restaurants within a few minutes walk, and the Old Vic & Tate Modern are not far away. It's also very near the Southwark tube station offering easy access to Westminster, Oxford St, Buckingham Palace & The Shard.
I stayed in an Executive Room, which was a large size especially for London. There's not really a notable view, but the room did have an outlook towards the City. I always prefer hotels to have a walk in shower (as opposed to the dreadful shower over bath). This shower is also big enough to move around. I don't particularly like the Novotel branded toiletries - I think they could use something a little better.
Breakfast in the morning is a busy affair but the buffet is plentiful and I didn't have any trouble finding what I wanted. There's a lot of tech to keep you busy while you eat (either iPad or personal TV) but one morning the TV did not work at my table.
Staff were all very pleasant and helpful. When I was trying to use the self check out machine it only accepted one of my room keys. I was left wondering what to do with the other so the lovely front desk staff came to my aid.
If you are leaving or arriving via Gatwick you can get a train from Blackfriars station up the road.

Room Tip: Executive Rooms offer more space

Took daughter for 2 days to London to visit a few places. Hotel is in good location walking distance to London Eye and close to tube station.
Rooms are very nice and comfortable with few nice gadgets. Swimming pool is nice. Hotel staff very attentive, especially towards my daughter, which was much appreciated.

Comfortable beds for 3 people, clean, breakfast was good, staff were friendly & helpful to all our request, place is quite, modern building, walking distance to the train station & tourist attractions. We did a lot of walking from the hotel to London Eye, Parliament Building, Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace and dining @ the restaurants along the River Thames, very nice area. Surely we will be back here on our next holiday.

There is nothing we could state about the hotel to diminish it's quality and servisse. Everything was perfec and done to ensure the hosts would be satysfied. The rooms follow the same standard of all Novotels we have been before and what apeeared inicially to be a business only hotel revealed itself as a great choice. great location and excelent service...

A tip; it is perfect for people who have already been to London before and have a minimum of experience with the London Transportation system. Buses and tube station merge perfectly in th area.

...were it not for the overcrowded breakfast time ! We understand that th hotel has it's limitations, but somehow we had the feeling that they could do better. For example, directing businessman who were on their own to occupy the small tables for two instead of sitting wherever they liked.

Anyway, that didn't spoil our vaccation. We woul defnetally go back there.

We were there on March 2013. Cold and windy - best travel option ? The Underground.

Room Tip: since the hotel is surrounded by business buildings, there is no much of a view, but we did manage a...
