“Central South Bank Location”
Reviewed 13 May 2014

The Union Jack Club is an old established hotel for servicemen & servicewomen, retired servicemen & Servicewomen. This establishment also offers their friendly service to allied foreign and commonwealth servicemen and their families too.

The hotel resembles a cross section of old private clubs more akin with various older British Officer or Sgt's messes. The walls throughout the hotel are emblazoned with military memorabilia, paintings and photos of the British armed forces, men and women throughout the centuries allowing you to absorb several history lesson before reaching your room.

The rooms were very basic with a choice of ensuite or cheaper options for solo travellers with shared ablution rooms resembling older Sgts Messes accommodation style. The facilities here were immaculate and clean as expected of any service establishment.

The staff were polite, efficient and helpful. The restaurant, breakfast areas and bars were very reasonable for central London and the food variety was very good too.

THINGS TO SEE

Located 5 to 10 minutes walk from Waterloo Bridge and the even closer Waterloo station. Getting around central London is a breeze with much to see in reasonable walking distance. We walked west on our first day and across Westminster Bridge into one of the best tourist attractions of London, taking in houses of parliament, St James Palace, Buckingham place etc. In the evening by tube and within 15 minutes we were in the heart of Soho and the West End Theatre land. Day 2 we walked East along the South Bank, taking in TV studios, a full reconstruction of the Golden Hind, the Clink Prison museum, HMS Belfast, William Shakespeare Globe theatre, Tower Bridge and London Tower. On the way there were many bars, restaurants, cafes, galleries etc.

If you are looking to explore London and want to be in a good location - look no further. Reasonably priced also. Make sure you take advantage of their breakfast, it's wonderful and you won't find a better value.

We were a family of six adults staying in a 3 bedroomed flat for our daughter's 21st birthday, we had a wonderful stay. The flat was very big, comfortable (good beds) and spotless, with all the facilities you need to get started and then you can top up the provisions from the supermarket nearby. The club is directly across from Waterloo Station, so perfect after a long day sightseeing. There are lots of good pubs and restaurants within walking distance so no problem for eating. You can also eat in the UJ restaurant which is good and very reasonably priced. We also had a bar lunch during our stay which again was very tasty and good value for money. The staff at reception are very efficient (but not overly friendly) however all the other staff were very friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay at the club again and we wish we had thought of staying there on previous trips to London. We will be back!

Located within a few minutes walk from Waterloo Station, the Union Jack has comfy but small older rooms for a very reasonable price. The club atmosphere makes one feel right at home. Because it's near the train station, expect some noise. There is a very substantial breakfast available (extra fee). It was pleasant to have a drink in the evening at the bar with like friendly folks. Nice historic feel and within walking distance to many tourist attractions, trains and tube.

I stayed here about 20 years ago and it has improved vastly since the last time I went here.
It's got a great location for visiting all the sites of London with most being in a 20 minute walk. This hotel is only for forces, ex forces, tri services and people from around the world from the same as above.
The reception staff are happy and always meet you with a smile, the reception area is clean tidy and very interesting with photos of all who have gained the VC. The bar is just around the corner and the female staff are good but the male could cheer up more. Lots to choose and bar snacks available.
The room we were in was a little small and a little old fashioned but the shower was great.

This has all the facilities (and more) of a gentlemen's club, right in the heart of London. The really good news is it has none of the snootiness of many of the traditional gentlemen's clubs
here and women are not treated like second class citizens. Whether for overnight accommodation, a meal, or meeting friends for a drink, prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is welcoming but not intrusive. This is a well-priced great little retreat in the heart of London, within a minute's walk of Waterloo Railway Station. Bedrooms are adequate and the bed linen good so it is an affordable option in central London when we need to be in the capital. A club for those who have served in the British armed forces, but some of our international friends have been able to use their reciprocal club status.

The location is fantastic. The prices are fantastic. The staff are excellent, understanding and patient. The rooms might be basic, but it is a bed for a night or two in the most fantastic town in the world.

If you have served then you should make this wonderful facility your first choice when stopping in town.
