I booked to go to the Five Fields with my wife as part of a short break in London. It had always featured high up in the rankings for London restaurants and I was keen to see how good it really was. From the moment we arrived we were impressed. It was a really well presented restaurant and it was an education for us as we witnessed an amazing demonstration of customer service throughout our visit. We opted to go for the Tasting Menu which seemed to provide an interesting selection of dishes and it exceeded our expectations. We chose a reasonably priced white wine to accompany our meal and that was great choice.The whole experience was superb in every way.

Simply fantastic in every way. Food, Service, Wines, Atmosphere and in particular you are not on top of your neighbour!

Let’s get the good bits down first.
1. Beautifully appointed room, tables and decor generally - a lot of money and thought gone into the design ( even in the toilets) and wonderful private room if you are a small party

2. Quiet enough to hear your own conversation ( rare in some new London restaurants whose architects must be hard of hearing) , but also good for viewing and getting the gist of where other diners may hail from (understandably , given the pricing, a good number from overseas who enjoy weak sterling....)

3. Huge number of staff of all functions, and nationalities. Slightly unclear hierarchy of who does what, but it doesn’t matter, all unfailingly friendly, polite and helpful

BUT........

4.Food and menu- exquisite but too fussy and decorative. Now I know this is the chef patron’s hallmark, and one should expect it, but by the end of the meal , it all rather merges into a miasma of colours, flavours , tastes . I can remember the Roe Deer and my wife’s Short Rib Beef, both of which were utterly delicious- but the rest would be a blur if I hadn’t taken home the menu to remind me and write this review. Maybe it would help if there was also a little card reminding us what the chef was trying to achieve with this style of cuisine. It is amazing, but not going to be to everyone’s taste - hence my being slightly sparing and not giving the fifth star.

5. Pricing - well what starts off as an interesting £65 three course menu with wide range of choices , ended up as £110 each with 4 glasses of wine in total. So value for money is questionable, but on the other hand this is virtually a one off so not easy to compare. Could be more acceptable both food and price wise if there was a 2 course option for say £50 , given that you are also spoilt with numerous amuse bouches and in between little pre - dishes
6. Return visit? That’s the big test - unlikely because it’s just a little too rich for my taste ( in both senses), and we are also a bit stuck when we asked ourselves which of our dining-out friends would we come back with

Conclusion - if it’s in your price bracket, and your dietary tastes are of the rich and adventurous style, you should certainly give it a try. It’s a very genuine and beautifully presented form of cuisinary art - but not for those who want simplicity!

Five Fields is like a throwback to the days of Waltons and The Aubergine. Classic, timeless, smart decor; mature, properly trained staff; charming, comfortable setting with proper lighting.....I could go on and on, and I havent even mentioned the food yet! Fantastically prepared and served, this restaurant may not suit trendy jet setters, as there are no bells and whistles, just beautifully crafted dishes, plated to the highest standard....surely worthy of 2 Michelin Stars. My only complaint is that the chef values his personal time, and choses to open only Mon-Fri evenings, which means a long waiting list. Please ignore this review, as you will make it even harder for me to get a table! Love it

Lovely atmosphere with beautifully laid up tables. The staff were very friendly and efficient and the timing of the meal superb.

The food was of excellent quality - varied taste and beautifully presented. A huge white truffle under a glass dome was shown around which could have been bought to be shaved on an extra course. We were given two divine canelles to take home with us putting the icing on the cake!
