“Refurbished first class hotel”
Reviewed 20 December 2013

Attached to Kings Cross station, The Great Northern was recently refurbished in April 2013. The room I had was on the 3rd floor, and despite the overlook to the main street and the busy station area, the double windows blocked 99% of the sounds below. Comfortable bed, nice bath and shower area with "rain" type shower head as well as a wall mounted wand. Plenty of lighting. A small sofa and table were provided. Free snacks and bottles of water, as well as a real-world priced mini bar stocked with drinks and sweets (only 80p for a Coke). A small safe, and a hairdryer were included in the room, inside of a small closet.

Everything in the room was brand new. The bed was very comfortable. Large flat-screen TV with many channels and radio stations. A common kitchen area was located at the end of the hall, which included complimentary tea and coffee, local newspapers, pastries and candy. A microwave and fridge were there as well.

Reception was friendly and efficient. A bellhop showed me to my room and explained how the secure entrances worked. I needed an iron and board and these were delivered within 5 minutes of my call to the front desk.

Since it's attached to the station, you can go through the bar downstairs and into the station without going outside. There you will find train connections, a few shops (M&S food, Boots among others) and some restaurants.

Nice easy access to the Camden area shopping, 2 underground stops away to Camden Town.

Excellent hotel, a bit pricey but a fine stay. Recommended!

This recently renovated railway hotel is clearly proving a great success. Even our taxi driver had heard marvellous feedback about it and it's only been open since the spring. Our room on the first floor had everything we needed and was beautifully quiet -no great view (It faced onto the roof of the new KX extension) but that didn't matter. And to find a big fresh cake and choc biscuits in the pantry at the end of the corridor was an unexpected bonus. We can also recommend the Plum and Spilt Milk restaurant where a light supper and tasty and well served. Smaller rooms than the Renaissance opposite -biut a smaller bill as well. We would most definitely stay here again -it's just so handy for the Eurostar.

Room Tip: We were cautious and went for a a room facing away from the main roads outside. But who knows,- tha...

It is refreshing and reassuring to find such a superb independently owned boutique hotel in a busy metropolis. Sophisticated elegance throughout, attention to detail everywhere you look, high quality design and finish. Lovely touches abound and the Pantry is an excellent idea in providing a touch of 'home' whilst offering independence. The creative team responsible for the interior and exterior design of this hotel deserve full marks.

Attentive and naturally polite staff service and excellent food.

My one night stay before boarding the Eurostar was a delight in every way. I would not hesitate to recommend and use this hotel again. Long may its unique and special offering continue. Thank you.

Room Tip: Although well sound-proofed, rooms at the back of the hotel higher up offer peace and quiet. It was...

My husband and I spent two nights here.

Fantastic rooms, loved the pantry at the end of the corridor. What a great idea!!

Service and check in was professional and the bar is lovely with great cocktails.

Breakfast was really good, and the service was excellent.

This hotel is in a great location and has a fab atmosphere too.

We stayed here for a special trip to London for my husband's 40th. The hotel is located right next to the station. I had emailed prior to the visit to see if we could leave bags there prior to check in, which was no problem. On arrival, the reception team could not have been more helpful, they were aware of the birthday and had our room ready to check in to. You are taken to your room by one of the team members who point out and explain where everything is etc.
We stayed in a Cubitt room (the biggest of the 3). It was wonderful, plenty of space, lovely finishing touches and the most comfortable hotel bed I've ever stayed in. The pantry at the end of the corridor was full of cakes, sweets, biscuits, various teas and coffees that you can help yourself to as well newpapers and books.
Unfortunately, we didn't get the chance to try the restaurant out, althought it looked lovely. We were there on a Friday night when there was a DJ on in the bar and can confidently say there was no noise transfer to the room from this, the station or general London bustle.
The room also had robes & slippers and a lovely bath. The TV has free movies (new & old) and Sky Sports as well as some good music playlists to just have on in the background.
We were again allowed to leave our bag at reception the following day to save taking it with us.
There is a small minibar/fridge, the bottled water is free and the other items not badly priced. Also a safe in the room.
The overall feel was that a lot of attention to detail had been made, from the fixtures & fittings to the staff.
We had a wonderful stay in the Cubitt room and I would love to go back.

Booked Wainscott room. Excellent fit out, functionality, chic aesthetic, bathroom fit out, complimentary snacks. Position is very good also - especially if using Eurostar. In house restaurant worthwhile too. Value for money also compared to 5 star London. So the drawbacks? Access doors from lifts slam so avoid room close to these. Service is nonchalant at reception ( although person dependant). Check in vibe is set with proximity of reception to the "thump thump music" bar which is makes it feel like small W. So overall not the high touch, cosseted, polite form of a UK boutique hotel it could be. But has great redeeming features and rooms are first rate. Would go back.

Room Tip: Wainscott is nice size. Avoid rooms near lift access door. Go higher to avoid bar noise.

This newly opened hotel is very conveniently situated, being part of The Kings Cross station complex and just across from St Pancras. The cubitt rooms are a good size and as there are no suites this is the largest you can get. Beds are exceedingly comfortable, bathroom is spacious and TV has loads of channels and plenty of films all for free.
The gently curving corridors have a pantry at one end with fresh cakes replenished throughout the day plus chocolate biscuits, fruits, sweets papers, magazines and nespresso coffee machine. Despite the proximity of a busy station and a main road the room was amazingly quiet and we had the window open. All in all a great place to stay.
