Me and my colleagues have been visiting Bangkok Kitchen (the original street food site) for a good few years now during our lunch break, and they have just moved round the corner into 'Star Anise' which is hidden away on a side street off Great Suffolk Street (If you didn't know it was there you are never going to see it).
BUT when you do find it, and you tuck into the Thai food you will be so happy you found it.
The atmosphere is certainly unique, but as a lunch time meal for colleagues, either as takeaway or eating there it has a good little vibe. A meal consisting of rice and one of a number of different dishes which are different each day (personal favourites include chicken yellow, beef panang, chicken and cashew) are £4.90 or £5.00 if you go for the salmon option. On Fridays they also offer free prawn and spicy crackers.
Thai Silk, situated 5 mins walk away has a nicer atmosphere, but costs more, and in terms of flavour misses the spot, whereas the food at Star Anise hits the spot.
Star Anise is certainly not a posh sit down meal, but it is not trying to be that, it is rustic street thai food at its best.
