Description: Located in Mayfair, Gymkhana is inspired by the colonial British-Indian ‘gymkhana’ clubs. The restaurant serves contemporary Indian cuisine using seasonal British ingredients with a strong focus on the tandoori oven and chatpatta sharing dishes in a convivial environment. The bar at Gymkhana specialises in classic Indian punches and cocktails - fusing spices with Indian spirits and a carefully selected gin and tonic list. Gymkhana was awarded a Michelin star in 2014.

we recently went as a group of 12 and were allocated the private room and asked to go for the tasting menu.
we walked through the two floors of the restaurant and it looked very nice and then we were presented with the private room which was a low ceiling basement room a bit akin to a dungeon.the seating, tables and decoration were not as nice as the main restaurant but as we were all having a good evening ti didn't seem to matter too much.
the food was served in good time and was excellent. the tasting wines were also very well matched.
the frustration is because of the room and also having looked at the main menu i wish we had chosen to take that and not the tasting menu. also although the service was good the staff were very removed and miserable.
Its not a cheap place so these frustrations will linger with us till we go back and eat in the main restaurant because it seems that we would really enjoy that.

Indian food doesn't get any better. The interior decor is stylish and elegant. The servers were very nice but must admit the manager and hostess exude an heir of superiority which is rather off putting. Upscale and pricey. But worth every penny!

We wanted to go there for a Hen night (for 1 drink) I phoned to book, I was told we couldn't book for drinks, but it was fine to turn up and have a cocktail in the bar...We couldn't, they were unhelpful and eventually we were told we could go downstairs and have a drink, as long as we didn't try and sit down and held our drinks at all times. We went downstairs, realised the reason for this, was that people were eating at the bar (using the bar as a table!) so we left. :(

The interior is a lovely place to be. The staff were all very helpful in both selecting cocktails and food.

We arrived early and were told we could sit at the bar. We had some barsnacks and my wife complained one of them was too salty (I didn't think so) so the waiter replaced it after having it cooked again - i thought that was a pretty nice touch.

Mains we had suckling pig vindaloo which is crazy tasty, prawns, potatoes and brocolli. All were extremely tasty and easily the best curry food i have had - and I eat curry all over the place.

Well worth a visit, well worth the wait and i will definitely be going back.

Delicious food with some great recommendations from the waitstaff. You would be crazy not to order the prawns. We also loved the duck dosa and the wild muntjac biryani. The servings of the more expensive dishes are generous and we were stuffed by the end of the meal.
For its Mayfair location, the bill was reasonable; £75 for 2 excluding drinks. Understandably people want to compare it with local Indian eateries such as Tayyabs, but given you are paying for the experience, location, quality of ingredients, presentation, service etc. I don't think this is a fair comparison. Whilst I wouldn't visit again for practical reasons (see note below) I would encourage other lovers of Indian food to give it a go. The flavours pack a punch and you are sure to try something you wouldn't be able to find elsewhere in London.

Note: I booked a table for a Thursday evening 2 months in advance. The staff confirmed there continues to be a 2-3 month wait for a table.
