Owner description: Whispers of advertising past are the focus of these walking tours through Stoke Newington (North London) and Bankside (South London), taking in some of London's best ghostsigns (painted signs, fading on walls). These are used to explore local, craft and advertising history through their unique stories and survival against the odds. Described as 'fascinating' by Londonist, the tour will inspire you to start spotting ghostsigns everywhere you go with an appreciation of their history and place in contemporary urban streetscapes. The tour is led by ghostsigns expert and local resident, Sam Roberts, curator of the History of Advertising Trust Ghostsigns Archive and author of numerous articles and book contributions on the topic.

Great tour, really insightful and informative about the history of Stoke Newington and by extension, London. An interesting approach to accessing a living history.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree, ghostsigns are a very specific lens to examine history through, but one that offers many different clues and insights.

Really worth the money! Sam has such a passion and knowledge for the signs. The two hours flew by and we saw some interesting pieces shedding light on the history of stoke newington.

Sam has an in-depth knowledge and is clearly extremely passionate the subject which shines through as he walked us round the numerous Ghostsigns that Stoke Newington has to offer. Sam is also very friendly and the whole tour is relaxed with participants encouraged to ask questions and decipher signs making it a truly interactive experience. Also I work round the corner and was sure I would have seen most of the signs yet I had only seen a couple of the 20 or so signs that we saw on the walk - Hands down the best tour I've ever been on - would thoroughly recommend!

A very enjoyable stroll around Stoke Newington saw Sam, our very knowledgeable and friendly guide, telling us about all sorts of faded advertising signs speaking to us from the past. I particularly enjoyed the audience participation side of the tour as we were encouraged to spot the signs ourselves and decipher the crumbling writing and the history behind them. Everyone was engaged (including a few locals who stopped and listened in to learn about the cracked scribbles that they had - or hadn't - noticed decorating their backyards) and I very much recommend the walk for all wannabe history detectives,

Thanks for the positive feedback. I love hearing what letters people see, especially when something is revealed to me for the first time on tour. As for the locals joining in, I prefer that to the occasional hecklers!

The Ghostsigns tour through Stoke Newington was definitely 2 hours well spent!

The walk, led and narrated by Sam, by far exceeded my expectations - he's not only a friendly and enthusiastic guide, but very knowledgable about the history of advertising in the area, the story behind individual signs and the businesses they once advertised. I initially thought taking part in the tour would merely simplify the task of finding the ghostsigns (of which Stoke Newington boasts an impressive collection) to admire and photograph. As you might imagine, I was wrong. I learned a lot about the local history and the signs in particular, and now feel much better equipped to explore other areas on my own. The tour explained in much detail what to look out for and how to begin to decipher and historically situate the signs. Sam has clearly put a great deal of work into preparing the tour and backing up the visuals with archival research (some of which he brings along for direct comparison with the current day vista).

I'd recommend the tour to tourists and visitors who want to experience London from a different angle (after all Stoke Newington is not usually on top of the tourist's to do list), but also to Londoners who can re-discover their city through this glimpse of the past in the present!
