“A great experience in a superb boutique hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 February 2014

We decided to head to The Jazz Lounge at The Wellesley for a celebratory afternoon tea. This is a new (a year old) boutique hotel on the site of the old Pizza On The Park. I enjoyed POTP several times and you wouldn't recoginse the place! They have done a superb job in designing this 30+ room hotel. It's petite and gorgeous with echoes of the 20's and 30's.

The Jazz Lounge is a room with sumptuous decor, live piano player and a mix of tables with chairs and sofas. We had a corner table with sofa, it was wonderfully comfortable. The pianist is excellent.

The tea: we loved the service which included sampling some of their 'specials' - the waiter introduces the dry tea from a box and you 'sniff' - this is pure theatre and delightful. In fact I changed my decision from the menu having enjoyed this opportunity.

The champagne was really good, perfect temperature and with a lovely fruity note. They served strawberries and cream with the drink - perfect combination and made a dreary damp February day seemed like mid-July!

Then there was a raspberry panna-cotta - this was just getting better and better.

The main event: foccacia roll with mozzarella and tomato, bun with smoked salmon and cream cheese, sandwiches. 3 types of scone - 2 of each (plain/fruit/chocolate) with home made strawberry jam, cream and......a dish of chocolate mousse!! Heaven! The latter was a first for us and truly innovative and really tasty!

The pastries were all good (8 or 9 types). Presentation was really good. Please see pictures.

The service, from the moment we approached the doors to the moment we left was exceptional. Friendly, well-informed, ever-present when things needed clearing or tea needed recharging.

We love the look and feel of The Oval Restaurant too and know that we'll be back soon to sample the Italian fare there.

Highly recommended.

“Perfect for Afternoon Tea”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 January 2014

I booked the 20% off Afternoon Tea at The Wellesley, and took my sister, mother and grandmother out for afternoon tea this year for a Christmas present. The hotel is very impressive, but not over the top. It is like being back in the 1950s again, which is quite pleasant.
We were greeted at the reception and taken to the Jazz Lounge, very friendly staff.
The overall experience was lovely, the pianist was playing his take on some 90s songs which was funny but it worked.
The cakes were good, the sandwiches good, the only thing I would say, was that the waiter made a mixup twice as to who's tea was who (we all had different teas) and he poured us the wrong tea, twice. He was apologetic, however maybe he should have specified what tea before pouring . That is okay though, he may have been new.
Would have been nice to be offered more sandwiches, but we did leave full,
great atmosphere, great staff
great decor.
a nice gem.

“Delightful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 January 2014

Great choice of teas. Sandwiches and pastries and scones. A piano jazz player in a corner. Redecorated art deco. Very good service, they remember what different tea had ordered every six persons we were at the table at every refill.

“Five o'clock tea at The Wellesley”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 January 2014

Having been shopping in Harrod's for hours we certainly needed a refreshment.

This time we chose The Wellesley where we were hoping that we could have tea, sandwiches, scones and small delicacies.

And in the fabulous surrounding we were served an excellent five o'clock tea with live piano music. We have to enjoy this British speciality when we visit London, and we can recommend The Wellesley as a good choice for this serving.

My husband booked this as a birthday treat and we were Very impressed. The hotel is lovely (and very new.) The staff were very attentive, we had a live pianist who played Happy Birthday to accompany my birthday cake. I was made to feel very special. The food was super and very varied. We booked with Top Table and got 25% off. If you want a quiet location this is the place to go as it is a new hotel still finding its niche.
