We decided to head to The Jazz Lounge at The Wellesley for a celebratory afternoon tea. This is a new (a year old) boutique hotel on the site of the old Pizza On The Park. I enjoyed POTP several times and you wouldn't recoginse the place! They have done a superb job in designing this 30+ room hotel. It's petite and gorgeous with echoes of the 20's and 30's.
The Jazz Lounge is a room with sumptuous decor, live piano player and a mix of tables with chairs and sofas. We had a corner table with sofa, it was wonderfully comfortable. The pianist is excellent.
The tea: we loved the service which included sampling some of their 'specials' - the waiter introduces the dry tea from a box and you 'sniff' - this is pure theatre and delightful. In fact I changed my decision from the menu having enjoyed this opportunity.
The champagne was really good, perfect temperature and with a lovely fruity note. They served strawberries and cream with the drink - perfect combination and made a dreary damp February day seemed like mid-July!
Then there was a raspberry panna-cotta - this was just getting better and better.
The main event: foccacia roll with mozzarella and tomato, bun with smoked salmon and cream cheese, sandwiches. 3 types of scone - 2 of each (plain/fruit/chocolate) with home made strawberry jam, cream and......a dish of chocolate mousse!! Heaven! The latter was a first for us and truly innovative and really tasty!
The pastries were all good (8 or 9 types). Presentation was really good. Please see pictures.
The service, from the moment we approached the doors to the moment we left was exceptional. Friendly, well-informed, ever-present when things needed clearing or tea needed recharging.
We love the look and feel of The Oval Restaurant too and know that we'll be back soon to sample the Italian fare there.
