“Close to Big Ben/Parliment and London Eye”
Reviewed 12 June 2014

Rooms:
-Quite spacious, very modern, sleek design and clean. No problem with room cleaning during my stay.
- Free Wifi Internet actually working in room, wonderful, isn't it?

Location:
- Could be a plus since it is Close to Big Ben/Parliment and London Eye. There are not many hotels on the other side of the Thames river bank, this hotel and another Park Plaza hotel near London Eye could be the closest you can get.
- But as TA reviewers already mentioned, the hotel is situated between two nearest tube (subway train) stations. Neither is too close and prepare to walk like 0.5 miles. Easiest way, if you are carrying big bags, might be taking off at "Waterloo" station, take a bus and after a few stops, you reach the hotel. Otherwise, walk a tad shorter distance from smaller "Vauxhaul" station.
First I thought this is a bit inconvenient but after moving to East side of London to join a guided tour later, it is even more painful. From this hotel, I needed to change two different train, not counting the bus ride to Waterloo and the whole morning was wasted. So my suggestion is if you need to change multiple train to reach to a destination, travel 2 or more, just use taxi so that your precious time in London won't be wasted. Train is not cheap anyway, no free transfer to bus like in NYC subway system.

Greeted very warmly by Sam on arrival, and happily I was upgraded to a Junior Suite which was very comfortable. Rooms lack the convenience of a kitchen area (like you get at the Plaza County Hall) but otherwise very nice. Breakfast was fine, though a bit 'sub-terranean'... Would certainly stay here again.

Room Tip: Junior Suite 921 was very nice...

There are a lot of good points to this hotel. Whether they make up for the one serious drawback will be a matter of personal preference in the end.

First, the good things -
The staff are friendly, attentive and helpful without being over-officious. Check in went without a hitch, and the various optional extras were explained.

The suite we had booked was spacious, clean, comfortable and well-furnished and equipped with just about everything you would want, if a little bizarrely decorated. The decidedly odd murals would have been weird enough without the carpet woven all over with Keats' "Asleep! O sleep a little while, white pearl!" complete with ludicrous misprint in the second line. One can't help wondering whether they got it cheap as a second.

Breakfast had a very good choice of juices, cereals, hot courses, fruit and yoghourt and all the usual teas, coffees etc. The choice of breads and cakes and cold cuts was rather more limited but still not at all bad. There were none of the little extras that make all the difference, such as smoked salmon or champagne.

Wi-fi was free, even in the room, although you could pay extra for a faster connection.

So far, so good. Now for the minuses.

Charging extra for the executive lounge even for customers in suites is a bit off. Hilton get this right, so why can't Carlson?

We had to wait over half an hour for our room when we arrived, even though we were over an hour after the check in time of 2 p.m. On the Sunday we got back after a long, hot day's sightseeing to find that our room still hadn't been made up by 4.30. We had to sit on the uncomfortable chairs in the annoyingly noisy lobby, waiting for the chambermaid. It was turned 6 before we got our room back, and even then the towels hadn't been replaced or the tea and coffee replenished, not to mention the sheets not changed for the third day running. It took us 3 calls to reception to get things sorted. This just isn't good enough.

Location, in general, is only a minor drawback. The wrong side of the river, past Lambeth Palace does not feature greatly on the tourist map of London. This is not necessarily a bad thing, in terms of crowds, for instance, and the hotel is within easy walking distance of both Vauxhall and Waterloo stations. Wherever you stay in London you will have to travel to sightsee at some point, so staying somewhere slightly less touristy can be no bad thing. Not that this hotel escapes the tour groups. When we were there it was full of Germans and Brazilians, and there are tour guides sitting around at reception most of the day.

Its location in particular, however, is the hotel's serious drawback. It faces right onto a main road with the river on the other side. Directly across the road from the hotel is a disco boat moored on the embankment. There is a major station just along the road to either side, and two major hospitals within a half mile radius. The more expensive rooms with their much-vaunted views of the river, the abbey and Big Ben pay for it by having their nights made hideous by the din from said disco boat, coupled with constant traffic and regular ambulances blaring past with their sirens going. Even on the ninth floor we suffered seriously from this.

The rooms on the other side have the railway going past only feet from their windows, so you pays your money and takes your choice.

Just remember to take your earplugs as well.

Room Tip: Get as high up, away from the road, as you can.

This was a random booking made one night to spend the night away.
The service was great and the room was perfect, the bathroom was amazing with a nice big bath and a separate shower.
The view was great overlooking out to the shard and then to canary wharf.
Breakfast was great and we ordered it through room service,
So was nice and easy.
Overall a great nights stay.

We stayed in an executive room with a river view on the 7th floor. The view was spectacular !
I only wish the bed had been on the other wall so I could have seen the view from the bed.
The bathroom was spacious with both a shower cubicle and a large bath. The hotel was clean, the staff were friendly. We dropped our bags in the morning and collected them when we checked in later that day. Breakfast was very good and served until 11am which is always nice on a Sunday morning ! I would certainly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: For a great view book an executive room with a river view.

Stayed here for 1 night and found the hotel to be nice, spacious rooms and bathrooms, great toiletries and an even better location over looking the Thames, Houses of Parliament and Big Ben.

Check in was quick and courteous with our room being ready many hours before check in which was a pleasant surprise.

Only real issue with the hotel was the temperature of our room which was like an oven even with the a/c on after the windows being open all day .

Would consider staying again though purely based on the location

We stayed here for a couple of nights and had a great stay. Rooms were spacious with very comfortable beds and nice bathrooms. Only drawback was the lack of light that comes into the room - we had a room on the second floor facing towards the inner courtyard which would explain why.

The hotel is in a great location, 5-10 minute walk from Vauxhall tube or a nice 15-20 minute stroll up the Thames towards London Eye and the attractions round there.

Would definitely recommend to people visiting London.
