It’s good to see the photographers’ Gallery open again after a major extension and refurbishment. There is more exhibition space, extra room for workshops and study and better scope for new media, both as exhibits in their own right and to interpret other work. The 'What do you see?' space encouraged me to sit down and write about what I was looking at. Exhibitions are accompanied by a creative programme of talks and workshops.

The cafe is on the ground floor and the bookshop in the basement, both open from 09.00 (weekdays) providing the perfect start to the day - I sat at the window watching the world go by and browsing the magazines. The exhibitions and other spaces are open from 10.00 (11.30 Sunday). A new addition is the camera obscura, which is open 12.00-15.00 Monday and Thursday and the first Saturday of every month.

While this is a very small gallery it had an interesting exhibition on when we were there that we enjoyed. Probably only really of interest to someone who is very keen on photography. I went with a friend who is and she loved it, especially the book shop and the print sales. There is also a little cafe. It is very, very small so it's not really an attraction to build a day around. The actual gallery is very close to Oxford Street so it's easy to have a look if you're shopping there. Though the gallery itself is closed now until early 2012 for restoration, they are doing events and things in other areas I think and the bookshop is in another location. If you are interested in photography, it will be worth a visit to see what they've done with the place after it reopens.

i really do not rate the curatorship of this establishment. The exhibitions tend to be well worn 'trendy' stuff of either shock value or silly effects.

Shock value is fine when it galvanises one to change an opinion or take an action to rectify an injustice etc. Silly effects obtained over-enthusiastic use Photoshop is utterly tedious.

I'm afraid I all too readily see the type of person who annoys. They stand in front of a boring image, try to look astute and knowing, but actually think the same as me. What a load of rot!
