“Saw Birdland with the family”
Reviewed 27 April 2014

Visiting London for only a week seeing a show was high on the Must Do list. I thought about all the basics.. Wicked, Phantom, Lion King.... but wait... Andrew Scott is in a play!!! All other possibilities were put aside. I have one daughter who is a crazy Sherlock fan and another who is a huge Whovian. This show had cast from both.

They were very easy to buy tickets from online and they had them easily available at the door. The theater turned out to be very small. It was fantastic! It was beautiful inside, not in the overdone theater type way.. but in a sitting in comfy leather seats while feeling like you could almost touch the actors from the first balcony kind of way.

It was a very small and intimate show, both girls had their fan girl moments and my husband who had never heard of anyone or any show, really enjoyed the play.

Great theatre in a great location with lots of cafe's to sit and enjoy the sunny days outside all around.. plus their own cafe and bar. Buy a drink and sip while you watch. Next time i visit London I will first check to see what is playing here!

Definitely my new favourite London theatre and maybe my favourite Theatre I have been to. It is beautiful and cool and has a great book shop.

Not to mention Simon Stephens' Birdland was amazing!

“Best night out”
Reviewed 21 April 2014

Total experience was excellent and really different from usual West End. Had drinks in the bar before performance, and smaller venue was perfect for the intensity of the play "Birdland."

“Pests - Upstairs at the Jerwood”
Reviewed 13 April 2014

We went to see Pests at the RCT. We have visited this theatre in the past and have always found the staff friendly and helpful. The cafe bar downstairs is a great space offering lots of drinks and good food. The upstairs Jerwood theatre can be rather challenging though, as the space is very limited on bench style seating. If you want to stake your claim you have to get there early and queue until they open the doors. Unfortunately for us we were the last ones in and the usher had to tell people to move up to accommodate us! The seats were ok in terms of comfort but this was a relatively short play without an interval and towards the end we were getting fidgety due to feeling a bit cramped. The play was excellent - fantastic actors and really grim subject matter but told with humour and empathy. I would visit again but would only be keen if the play is on in the downstairs theatre where there is a bit more room.

“New plays mecca”
Reviewed 8 June 2013

Despite its posh-sounding title, the Royal Court has been a major force in promoting new plays in London - through its Young Writers scheme, working with writers on their new plays, and international work with playwrights in developing countries. Royal Court playwrights include the late Sarah Kane, Ella Hickson, Roy Williams, debbie tucker green and many more. The plays are contemporary, often edgy and pull no punches in their take on modern life. Book online as tickets sell out quickly. Its programmes are the script (plus cast list) and are good value, given that they cost around £3. The bookshop sells many of their plays, and you may find a 'lucky dip' where you get 3 plays for £10. It has a nice (but pricey) bar cafe. Nearest Underground: Sloane Square. (Don't try and drive here - it's all really expensive or 'residents' only parking.')
