If you are a movie buff or a music lover, then HMV on Oxford Street is a dream come true. Probably one of the largest stores of its kind in Europe, the store also has plenty of games and audio accessories on two floors.
I spent most of my time getting several DVDs, and they do have a great collection. Bestsellers are strategically located at several points around the store, so you are literally surrounded and then you are compelled to buy. Ideally you should know what you are looking for before you come, otherwise it would be an overlong stay here.

After a prolonged time in financial difficulties, the HMV chain is trying to regain profitability against the tide of downloads and file-streaming. One move was to relocate in Oxford Street to their heritage location, on number 363, where HMV started business in 1921. In fitting out the new shop, HMV tried to recapture the past, also with pictures at the wall of times long past of the old shop with pictures of row after row of vinyl. I remember my first visit in 1982 to the HMV shop on this address to obtain vinyl long play records for very competitive prices to the Netherlands. The focus of the HMV-shop is on DVD's and games; however, they have to do more for the shopping experience to survive the Internet competition. To achieve this, you can buy more than DVD-discs; t-shirts, gadgets, goodies etc. I hope HMV will be present in Oxford Street for a long time to come.

Despite the difficulties the company is facing and our dramatically changed music-buying habits during the past 10 years, it remains the most organised music retailer. It offers a great selection of pretty much everything associated with music, video and games in a friendly environment where most employees know what they are talking about (with only few exceptions). I cannot imagine the high street without them.

Buy yourself a DVD that plays the European discs and then go crazy at HMV. Most of the US versions of the UK shows are pale comparisons so come here to get the originals. Well maintained selection and helpful staff make this a must stop for fans of Inbetweeners, Gavin and Stacy, and the like.
