We were staying right across from this fabulous restaurant and ended up having dinner there 3 times. It was so good - and after long days of sightseeing -- we kept thinking - why are we even looking to eat somewhere else! The service was fantastic. The food was SO good. My husband had the lasagna all three nights. I had the spaghetti with crab two times and a delicious chicken dish with side grilled veggies another night. My glasses of red wine were a good pour and fabulous as well. We originally thought the restaurant was just pizza and wine place – and in fact, that’s what we went in for the first night. What a pleasant surprise to find out how much more they had to offer! Everything was fabulous – but, what was even better was how wonderful they made us feel each time we were in there. What a treat!!

Disappointing experience. Decent food. Odd service. Won't be returning.

I made it clear that this was a tastecard booking when booking and on arrival. My friend and I ordered two mains (lamb; monkfish) and two sides. When the bill arrived, they said that our mains were excluded from the tastecard offer and so no discount would apply (save for on the sides). When asked, they refused to apply the discount on the basis that there was a separate piece of paper (hidden between the salt and pepper and a flower pot, and which we had not noticed) which excluded most of the mains and all pizzas from the tastecard offer (you’re largely limited to some – but not all – of the pasta dishes if you want a tastecard discoutn). This had not been brought to my attention and we would have ordered differently or gone elsewhere had we known (The tastecard website says only that pizzas are excluded from the offer). Given that they knew full well that this was a tastecard booking, they ought to have highlighted that our dishes were excluded from the offer (if they can even do this) when we were placing the order so that we might reconsider our choices. It’s disappointing that – despite our complaints – no further discounts were offered, and the staff were unsympathetic; it seems that they’re deliberately trying to trick customers into this position of ordered food that is not covered by the tastecard.

The mains that aren't pizza or pasta are typically £20-26 - sides extra at £5 to £6. Without the tastecard discount, we did not think this good value given the quality and service on offer, and given the competition in the area.

But for this, we would have returned. However, this left a bad taste in our mouths.

Hi Dan,

I apologise about the inconvenience caused but we do explain to Taste Card and Gourmet Club customers that we do have items that cannot be discounted, we give that piece of paper ( that was hidden behind some flower pot apparently, since we only have tiny salt and pepper shakers on the table...) to explain that there are certain items we just cannot discount due to cost price. As a taste card member you should be fully aware of the terms and conditions of taste card: http://www.tastecard.co.uk/terms-and-conditions which state that certain menus/menu items may not be included in the discount. Again I do apologise about the misunderstanding but I just want to make things clear so that this doesn't happen to you in the future with any other restaurant. It is quite hurtful to restaurants when a review is targeted towards something that doesn't have to do with it.

Thanks for dining at Salotto 31, hope you have a great summer :)

This restaurant allows itself to be advertised as offering a 50% off food Taste Card discount, but when we tried to use it we found that most of the dishes were excluded, including those that we had just eaten. The warning about this is on a slip of paper on the table which you might well overlook.

It's a shame, because the food is very nice. But for their sneaky behaviour, we would have happily returned.

I apologise about the inconvenience but we always explain before we put the list on the table and I'm sorry but we never do anything sneaky we simply can't discount certain items due to the fixed prices and portions we get from suppliers. It's that simple. And its only less than a 1/3 of the dishes that are not included not "most". We respect all our customers comments and complaints but as long as they are realistic.

thank you for visiting us, hope you have a great day :)

Found the service here very patronising - not sure if it was because we were 3 ladies alone or because of the traditional Italian style service. Some people may like the OTT flamboyant style but not me, sorry.

Pizza ok and good value but wine and antipasto platter very expensive.

Platter came with decent amount of hams (although not enough prosciutto, Parma or Coppa and too much salami / mortadella style for my preference) but only 2 hard (and similar) Parmesan cheeses.

Pricey because the platter cost £22.90 and we had to order separate bread at £4.50 - all incurring the additional 12.5% service charge of course!

Won't be returning sorry.
