“The perfect place to stay”
Reviewed 20 September 2006

This is definitely the place to stay in London. Gorgeous house, wonderful hosts, terrific neighbourhood, super rooms, great breakfasts. Located between Finsbury Park and Crouch End on a street of nice houses. Finsbury Park is cheaper area - Crouch End is great for lots of restaurant choices and terrific (reasonably-priced) shopping. Mount View is only 5 tube stops (on Victoria Line) from the centre of London. Odette offered to get us from the Finsbury Park tube station - but her directions about taking the W3 bus were so clear we thought we'd add to the excitement of the trip and find it ourselves. With some help from people on the bus, we knew which stop to get off at. Easy walk - got to see the neighbourhood better. Only took 10 minutes. HIGHLY recommend this wonderful home.

We arrived at the tube stop one-half hour late as our plane was late. We were to call Odette and we would be picked-up & driven to the B & B. Upon calling, she said she had left to go to a party - no one was available to pick us up; but a couple was there to let us in. We took the bus to the closest stop, then walked 2-1/2 blocks to the B & B.

We were told by the couple staying there that we were not to enter into the kitchen, dining room or living room. These rooms are all on the ground floor. They are closed-off all day & night to guests except for the 8-9 am breakfast hour. Guests are to stay in their room. The house has 3 floors. All bedrooms are upstairs and are quite warm in each room. The 2nd & 3rd bathrooms are shared with Odette and the housegirl/breakfast cook she employs who both live on the top floor. Odette did not introduce herself until two days after we arrived. It is not a welcoming situation. It is also not convenient to London and sightseeing. It is necessary to walk to the bus, then take 2 to 3 different tubes to get into London and see the sights. If you come back from London at night you should take a cab - costing 35-50 GBP - as the areas are poorly lit and may be too dangerous leaving the tube, taking the bus & walking to the house at night.

This B & B has been renovated; however, all other homes of this period surrounding the house are in very poor condition and the area is rundown.

  • Liked — Nothing. We felt that we were stuck there - owner is never around.
  • Disliked — No one to meet you; no access to any rooms of this B & B except your own bedroom.
  • Tips/Secrets — Find a B & B where you will feel "wanted" and comfortable.

Bed-and-breakfast guesthouses are my preferred form of accommodation when travelling, and the Mountview Guesthouse will rate high on the list of B-and-B's that I'd like to go back to. I stayed there for a week on the recommendation of my daughter, who had spent a weekend at the Mountview with her husband the previous summer and who accompanied me on this trip. It's a bit off the beaten track, in the North London village of Crouch End, but buses to the Finsbury Park Underground station are frequent and the Underground will get you down to Leicester Square or Piccadilly Circus in less than 15 minutes.

We stayed two nights in the twin room with private shower and shared toilet, and the rest of our stay was in the big double room, with full ensuite bathroom, overlooking the quiet residential street on which the house is located. Both rooms were tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean, bed linens were luxurious cotton, towels were fresh daily, and thoughtful touches, such as a robe and slippers to use after a bath or herbal tea to have at bedtime, were not forgotten. Breakfast--a genuine English "fry-up"--was hot and delicious, and fruit, yogurt, and cereal were offered for those who preferred something lighter. The proprietor, Odette, was very friendly, and in fact offered to drive us and our transatlantic luggage to the tube station on the morning of our departure. Her housekeeper/cook was charming and cheerful, and could frequently be heard singing in some distant corner of the house.

The Mountview offers everything that I expect in a B-and-B: cleanliness; homey comfort; a delicious, hearty breakfast (including excellent coffee); and an opportunity to meet both the homeowner and fellow travellers and to feel, at least for a few days, part of a neighbourhood. Given the cost of tourist accommodation in London, my daughter and I felt it was excellent value for our money. We would certainly go back.

I stayed for three nights last week in this guesthouse and I felt comfortable, much more than in a hotel. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming. I am sure I will come back there again for my next trip to London.

We stayed at the Mountview Guesthouse for three days this month. Our room was lovely as was the bath. The room was straightened each day and we were given clean towels regularly. It is about a 20 minute walk to the tube, our you can take a bus. It is not convenient for visiting central London.

We saw Odette for maybe five minutes during our entire visit. She was not present at all during our last day. She left the guesthouse in the hands of a young woman from Belgium and an au pair who lived on premises. Odette seemed very busy and had no interest in spending time talking with us.

When breakfast was not being served 8-9 am, the doors to the dining room and living room were closed. I tried to go in one evening to sit. I was asked by the aupair why I was there? She was ironing in the dining room. When we asked to have breakfast an hour earlier the morning of departure, we were told by the girls to "fix it ourselves." I was directed to where food supplies were. I asked the au pair if she could possibly help out. She said that she did not serve breakfast at any other time than between 8-9 am. We had requested 6:45 to 7 am.

I found this place to be cold and unwelcoming. My husband and I have stayed at many bed a breakfast homes in France, the United States and Canada. All of those experiences have been good. However, I won't do bed and breakfast again in England. Hotels only, thank you.

On a more positive note, the new Mary Poppins musical is very much fun. One day we took the tube in the opposite direction to Hempstead Village and found it charming -- everything we hoped Crouch End would be.

We couldn't have been more pleased with our four-night stay at the Mountview June 24-28. We knew we were getting a big room, but we were shocked at the size of it: high ceilings, a fireplace, our own separate bathroom, a gigantic (and I mean gigantic) armoire and huge bay windows overlooking a tree-lined street. It is a bit off the beaten path, in northeast London - Crouch Hill, but access to buses and the tube are very good and reliable. Buses run every 10 minutes down the street. Our host, Odette, was so gracious and accommodating and wonderful to talk with over breakfast, which also was excellent. (Her kitchen and dining room are stunning). It is one of those rare gems we were so happy to find. And for the price, it is an absolute steal in London!
