Found this pub as a tourist and what a great little spot. Nice people, good beer and just had a ham and cheese jacket and all reasonable prices. Nice stopping place in your way too the Imperial War Museum
This is a good back street pub that I've been going to since the 1980s when it was a popular venue for students and staff from St Thomass' Hospital . It's mostly used by locals, has several large screens for the sport and serves good beers in an atmosphere yet to be gentrified by the hipsters who populate nearby pubs in The Cut and Lower Marsh.
We popped in here early for a quick coffee & were so happy with the staff and the atmosphere, we returned after our visit to the Imperiel War Museum (5 minutes away).
It serves proper pub grub at great prices. Our traditional ham, egg & chips were properly cooked, not a cheap cut & perfectly cooked eggs.
Some of the other customers were obviously colourful locals & so friendly.
We loved this place with its wood interior, so heavily varnished the carvings are starting to disappear (beautiful) and we will return again purely to sit in a proper, no frills local boozer.
This pub is like a locals pub where you wouldn't necessary expect to find one. It is quite large inside and has a pool table and juke box. The staff are really friendly and they serve a good selection of beer and wine. The drinks are standard London prices, but not too overpriced. And its worth it for the atmosphere (unlike some chain pubs not too far away). The whole place is a little dated inside, but this adds to the charm.
It's only a ten minute walk to Waterloo and five minute walk to Lambeth North stations, so good if you're running for the last train!
I've been drinking in the mighty 'apple since the mid 90's. I've always had a friendly welcome, a nice pint, and found it the best place to relax, unwind and enjoy life at the pace you want it to be...
Plus Points:
Their Guinness tastes Great!
They've got Sky Sports (on a few TV's scattered around the pub and the staff are always happy to flick over to whatever channel you want...)!
There's a pool table!
It's got a well stocked juke box!!
There's outside seating that in the summertime can be a real sun trap!
Minus Points:
Erm... It has to eventually close at the end of the night....
This pub is what you're after if you need to just sit back, relax, & have a drink. It's not pretentious - it's a pub with real people who have real jobs and quite simply enjoy a cold beer to see them through to the next day....
Thoroughly Reccomended
This is not exactly the pub I would choose for a night out with my friends but it is still a decent one. The interior is what you would expect from a Tipical English pub and it is comfortable. There are plenty of beers to choose from and the service is quick. We tried the starters and the chips with cheese and bacon were clearly overpriced. I think that you can enjoy this pub more in summer where you can seat outside and make the most of the cool weather. It is not worth a visit if you live far from it.
