Hampton by Hilton London Waterloo
Ranked #156 of 1,076 Hotels in London
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 16 July 2014

The hotel is well situated for transport links, just along the road from the Old Vic Theatre and being only about a five minute walk from Waterloo rail & tube station and maybe 10 minutes from Southwark tube station. I mention Southwark as it is the nearest tube with disabled access, which is important to me, being an amputee and using a wheelchair. The area seems quite safe and we noticed that women didn't seem to worry about walking alone in the area during the later evening, although the hotel does advise that guests be careful when returning after dark - but it is a part of a big city, so that probably is not unusual. I would say that the hotel caters well for all types of customer from business use, families, singles and couples.
We spent five nights at the Hampton by Hilton after reading about the complete renovation of the hotel. It's been done very nicely too. The rooms are very clean and the fittings are of a good standard, with a decent TV, fast free wifi, comfy beds and sensible lighting. Posh, by my standards really. The shower room had modern facilities with a bath-size shower enclosure with wrap around glass screen and nicely styled toilet and sink - again all very clean and tidy, with ample shampoo, soaps and moisturisers.
The room itself was a fair size, though the 3 of us filled it and it could be booked to 4 people, which would make things a little tight I think. However, something has been forgotten in this major renovation...
We had booked a family room with disabled accessability, which meant I expected to be able to use all the facilities of the room and bathroom whilst being in my wheelchair, but on checking in, the receptionist dropped a problem on us. The hotel doesn't have family rooms with disabled access! They have family rooms OR disabled accessible rooms but not both together.
Now to me that seems like something that the hotel should pre-warn you about BEFORE you land on the welcome mat. After all, they had to take my contact details when I booked and actually sent an email "reminder" of my booking a few days before we arrived! But there we were, with two options - 1. Split our party (myself and my wife who would have to help me in the room) into a disabled room and a seperate room somewhere for our teenaged son, or 2. Take a family room where I couldn't use the wheelchair through lack of space. We took the family room on the 3rd floor and I had to crawl round the room for 5 nights, which is not ideal.
The breakfast, which is included in the price, is exceptionally well presented and caters for all tastes. Choices ranged from fresh fruit, yoghurt, cerials, breads, bagels and full English. It was an all-you-care-to-eat buffet style and the staff were quick to clean tables and make sure everyone was happy. The dining area is large, bright and airy. It has various seating styles including small booths, relaxed comfy chairs at coffee tables as well as the standard tables and chairs, so it suits all group sizes and tastes.
So, all-in-all, the hotel is a lovely place to stay, with great staff too. But why no family rooms with disabled access, given that the revamp was undertaken shortly after London had hosted such a well publicised and well run Paralymic Games?

Room Tip: Don't ask for a family room with disabled access.

We were pleasantly surprised by this 'internet find'.
From check-in to checkout we were happy with this hotel. The receptionists, bar staff and waiters are extremely friendly and efficient, but it was difficult to communicate with our 'chambermaid'. The hotel is spotlessly clean and the beds are comfortable.
The storage space is limited, but we found it adequate for two people for four nights.
The restaurant food has a Portuguese influence and you can buy bar snacks.
There is a good choice of breakfast food, but you might find it difficult to find a table at weekends.
Many buses pass this hotel which makes it a good choice if you want to visit different areas, e.g. 188 will take you to the Cutty Sark at Greenwich. The bus stop is named after the 'Old Vic Theatre' which is a very short walk from the hotel.
On the opposite corner from the hotel is a good corner shop and a few doors way is an excellent fish and chip restaurant.
We shall stay here again.

Room Tip: We were at the front of the hotel on the busy Waterloo Road, but we were not disturbed by the traffi...

The hotel is located a 5 minutes walk from Waterloo Station. The Old Vic bus stop is right in front of the hotel. London Eye, Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey can be reached within 20 minutes walking.

Check-in is fast and friendly. All the staff is outright nice and always ready to assist. The rooms are meticulously cleaned every day.

The modern designed rooms are satisfactory spacious and offer all necessary amenities including air condition. Wifi is fast and it is free.

Breakfast buffet offers English as well as continental breakfast with a selection of cereals, juices, fruits, bread and cake. Morning newspaper is ready at the reception. The inhouse restaurant Assado serves Indian (Goa-style food) and draft beer is available from the lobby bar.

Given it's location, the friendly service and the overall brilliant impression this hotel is an excellent choice for staying while visiting the British capital.

Room Tip: Try to get a room not overlooking Waterloo road

Because there is no storage, so be prepared to live out of your suitcase. Tiny room, even by London standards, no opening window (health & safety we were told), very noisy air conditioning, so very little sleep.
Staff friendly but very little English, asked for our newspaper & 1 hour later they brought up toilet rolls, which could be funny, depending on what mood you woke up in. Hospitality tray -1 tea bag & 1 tube of sugar each, when asked for more - peppermint & camomile tea bags were delivered.
Very clean, only opened in February, breakfast-total chaos at 8.00am, people bumping into each other, dangerous for children, very noisy, not the way you want to start the day. Food - perfectly edible, but the usual continental offerings & a slightly warm buffet with marble balls of cold scrambled egg, tinned tomatoes & baked beans with sausage & bacon. As its complimentary there was no point in complaining, you just don't go back.
It is advertised as elegant & affordable, Yes it is an elegant building, elegant bathroom fittings, power shower, extremely comfortable beds, excellent location, but for £92 per night per person, it was not value for money. All along reception are cards which state if you are not 100% satisfied, you do not pay, but as the majority of people will have paid in advance, I think they are quite safe. Very disappointing.

Open for only 5 months, but this hotel should soon climb up through the rankings. There was nothing to fault. A lovely comfortable bed, conveniently situated for walking into the West End and a lovely breakfast. Well done Hilton - excellent value all round.

Room Tip: Top floor - good views and extremely quiet.

The room is spacey, better than usual room size in London. Quite conveniently close to Waterloo station, you can get to the Strand in 10 min walk. Nice clean colors and materials in the bedroom, with a good rest room. Somewhat limited breakfast selection, but included in the price. Unfortunately my room had a very noisy air conditioning system, which takes a star off my rating (would have been a 4 stars)
