The Sumner has a lot of potential, but our stay there was not what we expected. Upon checking into our room, my fiancee found hair on one of the bath towels. Not just a few, but multiple hairs of different lengths & colors indicating they came from multiple people. The other towels appeared to be fine. The wastebasket in the bathroom is tiny and operated by a foot-pedal. Every time I pressed the foot-pedal to open the lid it would tip over. The age of the building is somewhat charming, but the wooden floors creak with every step and if you're a light sleeper, you'll hear every step your neighbors take as well. A very noisy family with kids was put in the room across the hall from us and disturbed a lot of the other guests. The children were running up and down the stairs and every morning would play in the hall right in front of our door. I'm surprised the staff didn't step in to tell them to keep it down. The breakfast was good, but the same everyday. For longer stays, you wish there was more variety. The wi-fi in the room would go in and out all the time so we often went down to use the lobby computer. Aside from all this, it is a very quaint hotel in a good location. The staff was nice, but I would definitely consider other options next time I visit London.

I stayed at the Sumner with two friends during a recent visit to London and was so pleased that we'd made reservations at this particular hotel. Our room was comfortable, quiet, and clean, and the staff at the hotel was top-notch. They made our stay so pleasant! We were always greeted warmly and treated like special guests by the front-desk staff, and our many questions about how to get to this place or that were always answered quickly, correctly, and pleasantly (even though we asked some of them more than once!). My friends and I highly recommend the Sumner and will definitely stay there on our next trip to London.

My husband and I spent a week in a deluxe room at the Sumner in mid-May. The room was spacious and attractive with a very comfortable king size bed, a good-size flat-screen TV and a spotless bathroom with a large shower. There was a closet but no bureau drawers. With a week's worth of clothes, this was definitely inconvenient.
The buffet breakfast at the Sumner was very good. There were hot dishes - two types of eggs, baked beans, mushrooms, bacon (much too salty) and sausage (awful) - and cold dishes - salami, ham, cheese, bread (toast upon request), croissants, rolls, sweet bread, cut up fruits, whole fruit, jellies. There was juice and coffee or tea.
In the evening, there were little chocolates available at the reception desk and on several nights, there were complimentary cookies (like Mallomars) available to guests in the drawing room where there was a convenient computer as well as books and magazines.
Staff members were invariably polite and friendly, but there were a few instances when the person at reception informed us that the manager would speak to us about a problem (like no bureau space) and that never happened. In addition, it surprised us that there were a number of times when the person at reception seemed less than familiar with how to get around London and we had to wait for them to find answers on the computer for questions like how to get to Buckingham Palace and how to get to Harrods. Still they were eager to please and did eventually find the answers.
We'd come back to the Sumner if we could get a room with a bureau.

My wife and I stayed for 2 nights in early May. The Sumner lived up to great reviews I've read on this site. The location is very close to the tube, and is very quiet. The room was very clean, and well maintained. They have a solid breakfast served as a buffet, which is a little different. The only thing even close to critical I can say is that the breakfast room is in the basement (no windows), but the food and service was very good. The staff is very helpful. One evening I was looking for a cup of coffee in the lobby, and when I couldn't find one, the desk clerk brought a freshly made french press of coffee, etc. to my room, and would not accept a tip!

I had the pleasure of returning for my 3rd and 4th visit to the Sumner in late April and early May. The hotel is still my preferred choice for any visit to London. To us it like coming home and the location is fantastic.

Staff is always great and the hotel is always clean. I believe the Sumner offers some of the best value in London
