“Nice location with a funky Urban Bar”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 August 2010

A last minute change in mind and we are staying at The Hoxton.

Arrive there and there are crowds of people inside and out.
My first thoughts were wow. A lot of good looking guys and gals in and around the funky Urban Bar.

Go through the doors in to a cool (funky) atmosphere and proceed to reception to check in.

Check in very easy and with in a minute (literally) we have our room key and in the elevator to our room.

You look up and the ceiling is very a simple ceiling but aside from that it reminded me of Sheraton Lisbon or even The W Barcelona with the glowing light through the hallways.

Get to our room and I must say very nice.
Bathroom extremely clean as if it were a brand new hotel;
Bed very comfortable with extra pillows;
Tv and desk diagonally set from the bed.

The view wasn’t all that crash hot. We were facing a warehouse or something similar. But since we were only going to be there for 8 or 9 hours we didn’t care and then closed the curtains. For the price it was fine and thanks to a fellow TALFer I walked in there with an open mind (thanks parkandwalk). Because of this I certainly were not disappointed with our view.

In room:
Tea and Coffee with kettle;
Bottle opener should you bring some beverages of your own;
Wine and beer glasses;
Wifi;
Phone with free calls to US, UK, Australia and parts of EU. 1 hour free calls but see in room notice for more details.
Air Conditioning;
Mini fridge with water and milk;
Mini Safe;
Large (yes large not small) soap where they encourage you to take with you when you leave;
Body Cleanser miniature;
Shampoo;

The shower is very nice especially that I am a big fan of the rain showers and water pressure very good.

I do like the fact they refer to the H&S signs as Boring Signs.
Eg. Boring Sign No. 5 – We spent £445 installing a safe in your wardrobe to protect your valuables. Please use it. We can’t accept liability for lost valuables.

Breakfast and Dinner available but we didn’t eat there instead to opt to eat out.

Overall it is a very nice hotel with a cool and trendy bar area.
For the price we paid I would give it 5 stars but due to the view I take 1 away giving 4.
If the price was more (£200+) then a definite 3 stars.

Location very good with easy access to Old Street Underground.

Would I stay back here again?
Sure, if I was in the area but otherwise I will continue to stay around Piccadilly / Hyde Park Corner areas. As said this was a last minute decision and the price was very reasonable, compared to what you would pay if around Piccadilly / Hyde Park Corner, so no complaints.

Recommended – yes due to cost and location.

Stayed at the Hoxton last weekend after recommendation by a friend. we got a brilliant deal for the weekend although first time at this location. Hotel was great, very modern, very clean, rooms were lovely and had everything that you would need, hairdryer, fridge, tea/coffee etc. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Close walk to the tube which could get you to central london. Couldn't say anything bad about this hotel for the price we paid. Will return again if we can get same deal.

I look on Tripadvisor before booking anything, and was impressed by the Hoxton's rating.

I have looked through at many London hotels, and some looked fairly dodgy. The Hoxton looked trendy, clean and comfortable.

My husband and I stayed 2 nights (Wed 11th til Friday 13th Aug) and we enjoyed our 2 days away in London.

Positives:
-Trendy hotel, nice to take your spouse to
-Clean rooms, trendy vibe.
-Comfortable bed
-Some lovely staff, quick check in
-Gorgeous food in the Grill downstairs, fab bar
-Quiet area, out the way of the main tourist places
-Near Old Street tube station
-When travelling back from Leicester Sq, taxi only cost £13. We were told by a bar tender it may cost £40 due to traffic! Honest London cabbies.
-Comfortable bed
-Quiet in room after 11 ish, great night's sleep
-Quick room service even though restaurant was busy
-Free mini waters and mini milk
-Free little snack pack for breakfast
-Little free Aveda products
-Cool hotel we enjoyed coming home to
-Drinks and snacks on sale in reception
-Gorgeous interior of downstairs
-As many movies as you wish for £7.50, great for a room service day
-Better than any hotel I had searched for online prior to staying
-Boutique hotel feel, plush, cool, little luxury vibe

Negatives-(to show whole picture)
-standard size, but room seemed small to us.We are used to split floor rooms now and mini suites, so have been spoiled.
-very grubby walls, needs repainting
-no bath! Only a shower, clean but tiny bathroom
-no view, overlooking shafts
-very noisy in room due to overlooking the vents and downstairs til gone 11, no problem to us and we were out first night and up late in hotel 2nd, but businessmen might not appreciate this
-some snooty staff

We would stay here again if staying in the area. It is exquisite to look at, one of the nicest bar areas I have ever seen in a hotel, more akin to Vegas than Hoxton. Food was devine! I am a fussy veggie, so limited choice, but what I did choose on both days (Wild Field Mushroom and Cheese) was delicious. Drinks were excellent too. It is out the way, but near the tubes and very easy to get to. It was a 'safe' area, I'd feel safe having my morning walk or run around there.

Think next time we visit London we will stay more central due to my husband's knee, or rent a luxury apartment, but if staying in this area, we will be back.

After bidding in their regular hotel room auction, we got a room here for under £30 which considering the quality and location is fantastic value for money. Perfectly located for Shoreditch/Hoxon restaurants and bars, rooms are small but perfectly formed and have everything you need including toiletries, hairdryer, fridge, free wifi, flatscreen TV and a very comfortable bed. We had a couple of cocktails in the bar before dinner and it has a nice buzzy atmosphere - didn't eat in the restaurant but would consider it next time (seemed like typical American style food - burgers etc). Would definitely return even without the bargain auction price.

We have stayed here a few times now and I can't fault it.

Rooms:
Spacious, modern and clean with all the facilities you'd expect (hair dryer, tea/coffee fridge, safe etc.)

Location:
East London. Less than 5 min walk from Old Street tube station (Northern Line) and less than 10 min walk to Liverpool Street station (Hammersmith&City, Circle, Metropolitan and overground). Hoxton (near Shoreditch) is lively and interesting with good restaurants, bars and cafes scattered about. Personally I'd recommend a visit to Hoxton square which has all three.

Food:
The bar and grill downstairs has always seemed popular and busy whenever we've stayed at the hotel, which is a good sign. However, we haven't actually eaten there ourselves as we prefer to go out and explore. Although its possible to pay extra for a full cooked breakfast downstairs, they have a clever system (which I prefer) where you hang a paper bag (provided) on your door handle and in the morning they fill it up with fruit, yoghurt and juice; quick, convenent and healthy!

General:
Hotel has always been clean, staff always friendly and lots of good ideas like one big carton of milk instead of little sachets, a full sized bar of soap instead of tiny ones that fall down the plug - little things that make it that bit different. Helpful information like maps and walking distance to local places is provided. A modern, contemporary hotel with a friendly atmosphere.

The best bit:
The Hoxton does 'room sales' a couple of times a year where it is possible to book a night's stay for £1 or £30. The website gets very clogged when the sale happens so its a bit hit and miss, but we've got lucky a couple of times. £30 a night for a room in London is amazing value - and £1 for a room anywhere is incredible! Keep an eye on the website or sign up for email alerts if you want to give it a go. Even without the room sale though, this hotel offers competitive rates for London and I think its good value for money.

My partner and I were lucky enough to get one of the £1 rooms in the Hoxton Hotel sale and stayed there for a night in August 2010, and we were quite impressed. Naturally we couldn't argue with the value, especially since breakfast was included!

The hotel is surprisingly upmarket. I say "surprisingly" because - although both Hoxton and Shoreditch are up-and-coming areas with a lot of trendy venues - as anyone who has been to Old Street Station will know, the surrounding area still has a long way to go. There are a lot of boarded-up, graffitied shops with broken windows and there is even a Costcutter directly opposite the hotel - handy, yes, but it gives the area a distinctly cheap and rough feel.

The Hoxton itself is very plush and well-furnished with decor which is obviously expensive but without being too lavish, and the restaurant (which we did not eat at, but visited for a drink) looks high quality and has a good reputation. The room was small (welcome to London) but well-decorated and expensively outfitted. The walls are solid enough so that you can't hear your neighbours, although unfortunately the same cannot be said about the doors - I was awoken at around 4am when people on our corridor arrived back from being out clubbing. The only other quibble here was that the exquisite floor-to-ceiling windows gave us a perfect view of the grotty loading bay of the building opposite, and there were no net curtains to shield us from the stares of truckers on their ciggie breaks. But, again, this is London - no sea view here!

So, with regards to marks: cleanliness, rooms and value all get 5 stars. Sleep quality misses out due to the inadequate sound-proofing mentioned above. I've also marked the hotel down for location, partly for the dilapidated area it is situated in and partly for the fact that it's not very central. And I've marked it down for service because of the fact that we were walked in on TWICE during a one night stay - the first time only minutes after we checked in, and the second at 9.30 in the morning by a maid who had not only ignored our "Do Not Disturb" sign and let herself in, but then also proceeded to remove it.

All in all, a very good hotel - chic and tasteful, if a bit small and not ideally located. I would really recommend the Hoxton, especially on the £1 deal (!), although I suspect that for £129 per night I would expect a bit more in terms of size, quality of service and location.

Nice hotel close to the Tube. Room and bathroom very clean and the bed was very comfortable. Couple of negatives though. On arrival to bedroom, the window was open and there was a strong smell of cooking coming up from courtyard / restaurant. Solved this by closing window and using air conditioning. There are no net curtains on the bedroom window and as the room overlooked the courtyard, it faced onto other bedrooms - not wanting to be seen changing in the room or seeing other people in their rooms, had to close the curtains for the remainder of the stay. Had lunch in courtyard which was very nice before heading out for the day. On returning to the hotel from tiring day out, just wanted something to eat but the dining area which is in the bar was very busy and noisy - didn't want to shout over my meal. So tried to order room service at 10pm from bedroom. No luck - couldn't get a reply from room service number, rang reception no luck there either and after going down to reception and asking the guy there, he couldn't find anyone to look after us. Took a short walk to nearby pizza express, got takeaway and was sorted. Music in bar went on until 2-ish causing a constant drone but thankfully the bed was comfy. Music started up again when breakfast was being served downstairs. Nice hotel but would be nicer if they just turn down the music and get some nets!
