“Food is great, restaurant lovely but the service needs sorting”
Reviewed 1 June 2014

We had booked artusi for a friend's birthday dinner. Our booking was for 8.30, and they needed to be sure to be home by 11 as they have a small baby. We arranged to go for a drink beforehand elsewhere. When we arrived, we were told (not very apologetically) that our table wasn't ready and would we like to have a drink"at the bar". Which we didn't, really, since we'd already been for a drink, and especially not when we discovered the bar was actually a dark, uncomfortable bit of corridor.
We eventually sat down - having had to enquire ourselves about progress, we weren't kept informed - almost 20 minutes late. Our very cheerful waitress did come over straight away to take our orders, but then insisted on remembering them rather than writing them down. I don't mind that as long as it causes me no inconvenience and the order is still correct but instead we had to repeat them and say them in a particular order so she could remember them. Then she had to come back and check she had remembered one of our choices correctly. I do wonder what is wrong with writing things down....
The food was really superb. The pasta with anchovies was perfect, just the right level of salty, the pasta perfectly cooked. The pea and pancetta pappardelle was brilliant, and the salsa verde with the artichokes was great. Mains were also good, especially the pork in milk. My only slight complaint would be that the pork came with fried potatoes which were very nice but it all felt quite fatty and needed something green on the side - they very kindly made us some greens when we asked, but as they don't officially serve side dishes, they do need to get the composition of the main courses right. Ice creams for pudding were good, but the tiramisu was pretty ordinary.
So in general, the service was friendly but too scatty and casual for a place charging these prices, the food almost universally excellent, but all needs a few teething problems sorted before it becomes a firm neighbourhood favourite.

“Amazing Food, Great Value, finicky Service”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

Artusi is literally on our doorstep, we regularly eat here and the changing menu keeps us entertained and what ever we order is never a let down and is always GREAT food.

However, placing orders and getting the staff's attention can be...interesting! BUT as soon as the food is ready from the kitchen it hits your table so service can't be faulted there!

So in summary, fantastic food, amazing value for money but service needs some attention. Definitely worth visiting!

“Artusi how disappointing - never got to eat any of the food despite a 2 hr wait”
Reviewed 24 May 2014

We were enthused by the Jay Rayner review in the Guardian about a local SE resto which served simple, good Italian food. The idea of ordering the whole menu (bc its v short) was tempting. But we never got a chance.
So I tried to book 3 wks ago and was told on Saturdays (I was after a lunchtime booking on 24.05.2014) they don' take bookings. Not that they only take bookings for 6 or more. But if we we turned up close to 12 we would be able to easily get a table for 4.
So far so good.
We arrived today 24.05.2014 as part of 50th bday celebrations for my husband at 12.40 and were told that we had to wait 45 mins. So we left our number and waited. 45 mins passed. We were told then only after going to the place to enquire that it would be a further 30 mins. That was after over 1 hr. I had noted an empty table ready for 6 in the resto and asked if it was free for us. To be told that it was a table for 6 (duh) and that it was reserved. I immediately mentioned that I was told 3 wks earlier that there we no reservations on Saturday only to be told that they accept reservations for tables of 6 or more. I was not told this when I initilially rang to book 3 wks ago.
But we waited with hungry kids and parents. We finally got a call 30 mins later to say we would have to wait a further 30 mins.
That was it. 2 hours after no table no lunch no apologies. The excuse was that there was a "lack of communication".
Shame.
But we did discover the amazing Begging Bowl across the road. Great Thai food. Lovely rose. And Daniel from Penang made it a great experience.

“Service issues”
Reviewed 23 May 2014

Artusi is the 'eating out' equivalent of reading an Ian McEwan novel. Despite being great at moments, he's above you- and don't you ever forget it.

We were told we'd have to wait an hour for our table- fine seeing as we hadn't made a reservation.

An hour came and went and we walked back to the restaurant only to be greeted by the manager (short girl, dark hair) We politely enquired if it would be much longer- an entirely reasonable enquiry considering the hour had passed. She said another 20 minutes. Of course, we were slightly upset as we were now quite hungry indeed. It was at this point that she almost challenged us by saying "Yes, it's a long time isn't it. Her tone of voice was certainly most unwelcoming. It did not bode well for the rest of the evening and was a completely unnecessary thing to say. I was amazed at her lack of politeness and people skills.

Eventually we had a table (we were made to feel like they had done us a massive favour) and were ignored for the first ten minutes. We had to physically ask for a menu and drinks menu and also had to ask if we could place our order. The manager we experienced earlier seemed annoyed that we had somehow managed to wangle a table and ignored us for the entire evening, never once stopping at our table to ask how we were or to see if we needed drinks. Very uncomfortable. Our waiter was lovely and the other staff seemed quite attentive although it appeared they had friends in, or just more valued customers who seemed to get most of the attention.

We ordered the Onglet which came rather quickly, very tasty but tiny portion. This is one of those restaurants that is 'above' serving chips with it's steak. So basically it's like eating a tiny roast dinner without potatoes. Rather disappointing and i was peckish by the time i got home.

I don't think we'll be visiting again. Maybe we weren't 'cool' enough, or posh enough to be looked after by the staff to be encouraged to visit again. Either way, this restaurant will do well! It's booked for weeks back to back and knows exactly who it's target market is.

So if you've got too much money, have taken lessons in how to speak like the guys on Downton Abbey, laugh raucously so that the people around you know you're having a better life than them, wear clothes which make a statement regarding a) your wealth or b) your artistic integrity then get yourselves down to Artusi. You'll be most welcome!

:)

“Service is wanting”
Reviewed 18 May 2014

I live nearby and eat out in the area regularly so we were excited to see a new restaurant open up. The first time we went there they took our number and told us it would be a 45 minute wait - fine since we hadn't made a reservation - they never called us back. It happened again the next time but on the second occasion we elided to go and wait there until a table became available. We were told we could wait int he 'bar' no such thing - just a shelf on the wall. waited for quite a while to be served a rink until I had to ask for a menu and physically tap on someones shoulder to order. The selection of wine was OK but there were no other beverages - terrible selection of beers and sprits. a table became available and soon after we sat down the table next to us was filled with a group of loud drunk girls who were friends of the staff. The service was quite terrible. The girl who served us was arrogant and even sat on the neighbouring table while taking our order! One good thing was the food - although overpriced and in small quantities It was quite impressive, shame about the service - We just didn't feel ike valued customers, and they seemed quite arrogant! also need to improve selection of drinks for non wine drinkers.
