We've just gotten home after an amazing night's stay at this hotel on my partners birthday. I was fortunate enough to have won this stay through a competition at work as £500 a night is a tad steep!

I advised the hotel a few days prior to arrival of my girlfriend's birthday and received an email to say they'd provide a cake in the room. We got there early (just before 1pm) but were told.our room would be ready in just 15 minutes, Suzanne the receptionist must us feel extremely welcome and after a short wait admiring the stunning views she personally came to get us and showed us to our Room. And Wow! What a room!! Far and away the nicest rooms I've had the pleasure to stay in!! A huge bathroom with a stand alone bathtub in the middle of the room, again with fantastic views, plus a huge separate shower and a TV above the sink (great for watching the world cup in!).

After spending the night out at a show we arrived back to the hotel about midnight and decided to head up to the bar on the 52nd floor, luckily for us at that time it had a couple of tables free but I would advise booking to avoid disappointment as it's something that you really don't want to miss! The city's stunning at night and once again the staff were very friendly!

Breakfast the next morning followed on from experience's we'd had the day before, fortunately breakfast was included as part of the package but the choices are vast, we plumped for the smoked salmon, scrambled eggs and sour dough bread which was lovely!

Overall the whole experience was amazing, the staff seemed to bend over backwards to make our stay as memorable as possible (despite some people staying there treating them with disdain which unfortunately seemed to happen on a couple of occasions!). Yes there have been a couple of teething problems but I for one would happily go back again!

We stayed for one night and had a fantastic stay. Our room was ready when we checked in at 1pm. We didn't leave the hotel for 24 hours! From the warm welcome in my native tongue at check in to lunch in the lounge, room service dinner, drinks in Gong and room service breakfast, the service, food and attention to detail were second to none. And of course the room and views were amazing. A real treat to experience such high levels of hospitality.

On a great sunny day the views across the Metropolis are fabulous, Best coffee at breakfast for a long time and the food for Conference lunch was superb. A gripe would have to be that on a hot day the Air Con did not seem to keep up with the people in the areas and the corridors were far too warm. Shangri La service is legendary and I was generally impressed. Shame that the tables in the bar seemed to be covered in stains, who forgot the sealant?

For my wife's birthday treat we spent two memorable nights at the London Shangri-La. From the moment we arrived we were overwhelmed by the attention to detail and the level of service. We consider ourselves well travelled and have stayed in some nice hotels around the world but this beats the lot (of course the view helps). The highlights for us: the room, the food and wine and,a pleasant surprise to us, the location. Being located right next to London bridge meant that we saw London from a different perspective and subsequently realised how much the city changes. Borough market was a treat and from there we had a lovely walk along the south bank with a quick stop at the Tate modern. A truly wonderful weekend.

As we have had very enjoyable stays at Shangri-La Hotels elsewhere and watched The Shard being built, we needed a good reason for for staying at The London Shangri-La which an invitation to a formal dinner in The City Of london provided! Our room was ready at midday when we arrived and we did not need to leave until midday two days later, giving us an easy hasle-free and full 48 hours, which we appreciated. We were on the 48th floor.A floor to ceiling glass wall along one side providing a superb view over The Thames and as far away as Harrow-on-the Hill, helped by a pair of binoculars available in our room. Luxury including marble floored bathroom, heated toilet seat(!), up market furnishings and a very comfortable 6'6" (?) wide bed. Plenty of accessories providing everything we needed, plus lots more. The Hotel is just round the corner from London Bridge Station making our journey home very easy and polite helpful staff meant that we may well look for another excuse to return !

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking The City.

We booked into the hotel for two nights on the "At the market with Chef" package. This includes room, breakfast, afternoon tea and evening dinner based on produce chosen during a tour of Borough Market with the chef. This was a superb experience. The tour of the market with Emil the executive chef was a real treat - choosing produce with a chef at the top of his game is a very enjoyable and educational experience. The tour lasted around one hour and we were free to choose just about whatever we wanted for dinner.

Dinner itself was unforgettable. Six perfectly prepared courses including scallops, turbot and welsh lamb as well as a separate menu for a faddy eater. The food was excellent, we have eaten in quite a few Michelin restaurants and this was up there with them - in fact better than most as the food actually looked like food rather than rocks, metal, soil or whatever the latest gastronomic alchemist has decided to conjure up. Add to this some excellent wines, very professional yet relaxed service and a 'to die for' sunset view of London and the result was one of the most memorable dining experiences we have ever had.

Okay, some of the criticisms in other reviews are justifiable, check-in wasn't great and being pounced on every time you enter the building can be alarming but I'm sure that these teething problems will be sorted and I bet some of the most iconic hotels in London weren't great during their first month of opening. Embrace the experience rather than trying to find fault with it and I'm sure you will feel that your money was well spent.

When the building is so iconic and the views so superlative it seems churlish to gripe about deficiencies in the hotel service.

But - as other reviewers have pointed out - the numerous, young, and charming staff just haven't got it right yet.

They are all most welcoming, but hamstrung by systemic failures in the setup.

For a start, what on earth is going on with a housekeeping service which apparently can't get the rooms ready on time? We had emailed - at their request - to give an arrival time and said 3.30 pm. Actually we didn't get there till 4.45 - and the room still wasn't available.

We've had the same before at Claridges, but it didn't matter because we were whisked into the bar and given complimentary champagne.

But because the Shard Shangri -La is so keen to capitalise on chance guests, there was nowhere to put us. The delightful receptionist took us round to the lounge but the immaculately white clad guardian told her in a stage whisper that it was fully booked. It didn't seem to be. I suggested the bar, only to be told that it didn't open until 5 pm and was fully booked anyway!

So we sat, drinkless, in the 35 th floor lobby, for 20 minutes. Eventually, after increasingly irritated discourse with the clearly embarrassed staff we were allowed too sit in the (half empty) lounge. Complimentary wine and sandwiches appeared. But not a great start.

The same thing happened in the restaurant, Ting. We were seated - at 8.45 pm - and given menus but then completely ignored for 20 minutes. The meal was excellent. Could we have an after dinner drink in the 58th floor bar, Gong? After an elaborate attempt - "we'll see what we can do, but it's tiny, and very busy" - the answer was, inevitably, no.

Of course the sensational views from the room more than compensated for these deficiencies but you don't expect them to occur at all at this level (sic)

A greater proportion of the available bar and restaurant space ought to be reserved for hotel guests. And if that is not commercially possible we should be prompted to reserve them when we book.
