“Clean and Helpful”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 August 2014

Bit quirky but the bedroom was clean, the bathroom was small but functional, plenty of toiletries provided and hairdryer. The room also had air con which was great in this muggy weather. Helpful reception staff and for the money it is really good value as far as London is concerned. Would stay there again

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 12 - double room with Air Con bathroom small but functional

If you have looked at hotels in London then you know the going rate has gone too far. We looked for several days on the various booking sites for a hotel that was reasonable and chose to go with the Church Street Hotel. There are a number of different room types available with some including an ensuite and others with a shared bath. The room that we booked had an ensuite and air conditioning. To help break it down I will go through the pros and the cons. Pros: clean room; well furnished; dual pane windows; friendly staff; air conditioning (although it is my understanding that not all rooms come with it); serviced by several different bus routes; several restaurants and convenience shops in close proximity; high quality shampoo/conditioner provided; common room with books, movies, honor bar; basic breakfast included with the room; good sized TV in the room and free WiFi. Cons: 40 minute bus ride to the touristy sites; located on a busy street; small bed (I am guessing it was a full bed and not long enough for for 6'2" husband) with loud springs; standard small room and bath that you find in every large city; lots of steps with no elevator (it was a bit like a rabbit warren); and no safe in the room or available at reception. Overall the pros outweighed the cons the price was right. The neighborhood seemed a bit dodgy at first glance, but it is definitely a diverse working class community and we had no problems. While we did not eat at the restaurant in the hotel, we heard from a local that food was quite good. We chose to eat at Van Hing across the street and enjoyed the Chinese/Vietnamese dishes. Given the proximity of the hotel from touristy areas I would recommend that you download a very helpful Bus Mapper app that we found invaluable. It showed us where we were and told exactly which bus to use to get where we wanted to go. Also, the buses recently stopped accepting cash, so be forewarned you will need to purchase an Oyster Card to utilize the public transportation. Finally, while it is nice to have a restaurant associated with the hotel, it was loud and open late on Friday night. The music and associated noise did not stop until 1AM, which is not appreciated when you have an early morning flight.

Room Tip: I don't recommend a room above the Common Room. The hotel had a meeting of some sort in there o...

We've stayed here a couple of times now, when we've been working in South London. It is, well, just marvellous. The rooms are always interesting, the staff are always helpful, the restaurant downstairs serves excellent food all day and there's an honesty bar. That's what really sold the place to me, the fact that they treat their guests as though they area decent people - and so the guests are ... If you want bland predictable, same all over the place, then this isn't the palace for you. If you want a little touch of the great Malcolm Lowry, then it is!

Yes, this hotel is cute and quirky, but they seem to have put more thought into the tiles they chose than into how the rooms actually work.

For £155, our room (supposedly deluxe) was quite small and felt more like a cell. There was just one tiny window high up on the wall, so we couldn't even reach it. The pillows had no puff in them, so they didn't support heads as pillows should. And the room was very dark. To read at night, I had to have the overhead light on, which obviously disturbed my sleeping partner.

The bathroom had an odd layout in that it was hard to get in or out of the bath. If any water got on the tiled floor, it was very slippery and dangerous.

We hadn't been told that the bar would play music until late at night, and the noise from that kept us up.

Breakfast wasn't included. For £5 you get continental breakfast -- I found a huge bug in the juice and pointed it out. There was no apology or explanation, and I certainly wasn't offered reimbursement. Yuck.

Fashion over function indeed. Way overpriced for what it is.

Clean & comfortable and if you have a room at the back, little traffic noise.
Car parking in church yard about 5 mins walk £5 for 24 hours good value.
Nice restaurant with good choice of breakfast. Honesty bar where you can take a drink and make a note on a pad what you have had for adding to room bill

We chose this hotel as it is in walking distance (25 mins) of a function we were attending in East Dulwich. There is also a regular 'bus service from nearby,
The hotel did not disappoint. It has a Mexican theme throughout. The room (number 12) was on the small side, but spotlessly clean with a comfortable bed and fresh crisp bedding. The bathroom had richly- coloured tiles, L'Occitane toiletries, and large fluffy white towels.Bottled water was provided, along with coloured glasses to drink from (a nice touch)
There was also a complimentary jar of the house hot chili sauce, and two small bars of Green and Black's chocolate.
No tea and coffee facilities in the room, but there was a very nice lounge where tea, coffee, hot chocolate etc could be made at any time. There was also an honesty bar in the lounge, but the prices here seemed a little steep.
We had the continental breakfast which was excellent value at £5.
Every member of staff we encountered was friendly and helpful.
One drawback is the number of steep stairs. There was also a fair amount of street noise, but we did not expect anything else in a busy part of London on a Saturday evening.
All in all a lovely stay, and I would certainly book here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back.

A bit outside of central London, the nearest tube station is Oval on the Northern Line (which is a 10min bus ride or a 20 min walk). You can get into town via tube by transferring however we found it quicker to take the #12 bus which took us directly to Picadilly and Trafalgar Square in 30 min.

The hotel rooms are brightly colored, supplied bottled water, complimentary tea and coffee, dvd rentals, L'Occitaine toiletries and lush, large shower towels. Wi-fi is complimentary and buffet breakfast was 5 pounds per person which we took advantage of. We had room #12 and it was a good hike up the stairs with our suitcases, leaving us out of breath each time... not too fun since I am 7 months pregnant. My other complaint is how loud we could hear our neighbors next to us slamming their door late at night and early in the morning....

The front desk was generally nice and helpful, we had to drop off our key each time. The room itself was average sized however the bathroom was a bit smaller than average. Personally, it was a bit overpriced (125 euro/night) for being outside of central London. I don't think I would stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room lower to ground floor. No lifts available.
