“Perfect for business”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

I booked the London City Hotel last minute for a one night stay in London. My only real criteria were 1) close to the office, 2) ensuite and 3) less than £100. London City Hotel ticked all three boxes.

Right next door to Borough tube station, although if I hadn't looked it up on Google StreetView before hand I probably wouldn't have found the place - literally just a doorway next to a cafe (which is also owned by the hotel I think).

Welcomed by a friendly member of staff and shown the direction to my room.

Very clean room, everything worked.

My ONLY criticism was that my room was incredibly hot, even with the window open. It was on the top floor, so perhaps other floors would be cooler.

All in all, the ideal hotel for a low cost stay for business.

Room Tip: I only saw one room (#16). It was on the top floor and incredibly hot. Perhaps rooms on lower floors...

Dear Alex,

Great to hear that we completed the 3 top criteria for your hotel check list.

If you would prefer an air conditioned room then please do select a single ensuite room for your next visit.

You are absolutely right Cafe Riva downstairs in under the same ownership. Perfect for a breakfast to eat in or take away right on your door step.

We look forward to welcoming you in the future.

Kind regards,
Claudia

The room was clean, the AC worked great, there was coffee and tea in the room, and one hour of free wifi. Good location for walking to many sites and next door to a subway station. I don't know if my room was meant for only one person, but there was no bathroom door, which would have been awkward if there had been another person with me. Also, my room was behind the coffee shop next door to the main hotel, so I was woken up early each day by the noises of the coffee shop opening. The prices seemed decent compared to other hotels. Overall a good place to stay.

Dear Guest,

Thanks very much for your review.

I will certainly take on your feedback about noise levels and we will see what can be done. The rooms are sound insulated and no-one has mentioned this before but we will look into your feedback.

Although the bed is larger than a normal single, the room type you were in is only for one person, which is why the bathroom does not have a door.

We hope that you chose to stay with us again in the future.

Kind regards,
Claudia

I booked a room here as I was going out for the night in Southwark Street and didn't want to be trekking home in the small hours of the morning.

The hotel is basic but the location is good and overall it's decent value: I paid £75 for an en-suite double room which was clean and comfortable. The staff are friendly and helpful. My only niggles would be - room quite warm as no aircon; payable wifi.

Otherwise I would happily stay here again.

Dear Guest,

I'm pleased that you were able to make use of our facilities and enjoy your night out in London and at such a reasonable rate. We are as you point out literally next door to the tube station and close to London Bridge and Southbank.

We do offer free hour of wifi per day for our guests as well as free wifi in the cafe. There is a low cost option available at £6 for 24 hour periods.

Kind regards,
Claudia

Let me burn these two words into your brain: 'cheap and central'. No it's not The Ritz with shared bathroom/loos in some rooms, dubious Wi-Fi, no air con but what the hell? What do you expect at the price? Cheap and London are not normally two words used in the same sentence when discussing accommodation. It's a two star that resides right beside a tube station, pub and has a dairy and Starbucks (think 'Free Wi-Fi and bad coffee) right across the road. We walked to all 'the' sights with no problems. more pubs and restaurants than you can throw a stick at in the local area which is very safe having the local Police Station a 100 metres along the road. LCH is not going to have any appeal to those expecting more than the basics so don't stay here and spend an extra 50 quid a night somewhere else. Fantastic office staff who are a credit to the hotel.

Room Tip: Remember they have rooms with/without a loo and bath.

Dear Paul,

Thanks for your review and for recognising our great location and fantastic staff team. As an independent and family managed hotel, we ensure that staff care as much about our customers as we do.

Although we only have 20 rooms we have a whole range of room types reflected in the price if the room. From rooms with shared bathroom facilities sharing with one other room only, newly refurbished twin ensuites, large double deluxe rooms, apartments and some rooms with air con.

We also have Cafe Riva on our ground floor serving excellent Monmouth Coffee and freshly prepared breakfasts and lunches, with free wifi for customers.

Kind regards,
Claudia

The hotel is literally a thirty second walk to the borough tube station. The hotel is across the road from a Starbucks, and above a great café for breakfast, café Riva, it is also a three minute walk from a Sainsbury's express and if you keep walking there are great restaurants and pubs all the way to London bridge. The downsides are that there was no air conditioning and I visited in the middle of a hot July!! But it is an ideal room from mid August to mid May, the bathroom was small but contained a shower and the beds were comfortable. The other downsides were that it was noisy at night but that was to be expected as the window was open due to the weather, also the wifi was only free for one hour but apart from those small problems it was a great hotel and the staff were very friendly. I would definitely recommend it to friends and family.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review and for all the local tips on what is good in the area and easily on hand.

We have had a rather hot July and you are absolutely correct to say that at any other time of the year the rooms are perfectly suited to not having air-conditioning.

It is very good to know that you felt very looked after by our staff team. We always strive to look after our guests 100%.

We look forward to welcoming you and anyone you recommend in the future.

Kind regards,
Claudia

Stayed for 6 nights and had a 5 star hotel service. The staff is really helpful and kind. The room was good and the cafe Riva downstairs is a great place also with excellent food and lovely service. They never missed a "good morning" with a smile on their faces everyday. Will definitely come back to both of them.

To hot in the summer time, for us.
No breakfast and no internet.

Room Tip: Good choise to be very close to the subway and London Bridge

Dear Rodolpho,

Thank you for your review.

We do have many different room types, which guests select at the time of booking. Some have shared bathrooms others are ensuite. We do have some rooms with air conditioning again to be selected at the time of booking.

As you say the price was reasonable and breakfast was not included in your room rate. Breakfast can be purchase din advance for £10 per person or you can pay for what you eat in our Cafe on the ground floor.

Thank you for staying with us.

Kind regards,
Claudia
