The new angel, notting hill gate, opened approximately a month ago. We thought we'd try it out and not having read any reviews, hoped for the best.
It's located an easy walk from Notting Hill tube, in a residential area but easy to find. On approaching the door was opened for us and we were greeted by a very friendly, smiling maître D. The restaurant is decorated in neutrals and pale tones, giving it a relaxed, stylish atmosphere. There were diners already seated and the tables were nicely spaced apart, with good acoustics so that there was a low hum of conversation; neither a cavernous silence nor a raucous din.
We had a drink at the bar whilst we waited for our friends; the bar offers mostly wine/ champagne/ small selection of bottled beer, not cocktails. The barman was friendly and chatty but not invasive.
We had a great table at the back of the restaurant looking out onto a small, planted patio area. We had several friendly staff helping us with our order, wine etc. We went for the tasting menu with one or two substitutions - about which the staff were more than accommodating. The 7 courses arrived perfectly timed, nicely spaced so that we had time to enjoy the food and the company. At no point did I feel 'bombarded' with courses nor impatient with slow service. Our wine and (tap) water were topped up in an almost invisible way by the waiting staff.
The food was truly delicious, modern cuisine but with classic skills - not overly played with and no weird, trying to be clever combinations. The courses were small enough to eat without the fear of being uncomfortably full but large enough to enjoy the flavours. It really was a perfect meal - each course was delicious and perfectly cooked.
The food was wonderful, atmosphere and ambiance just right but the staff stole the show. A faultless evening and my new favourite restaurant in London.
