Description: Established by Thomas Rule in 1798, Rules is a Covent Garden institution and the oldest restaurant in London. Tuxedoed waiters glide around the formal interior, decorated with antique sketches, where plush banquettes offer a discreet retreat from the main dining room. The whole-hearted menu of traditional British food specialises in classic game cookery, oysters, pies and puddings, featuring game birds, roe deer and Belted Galloway beef fresh from the establishment's own High Pennines estate. The wine list is a French-led affair, or there are native draught beers served in silver tankards.

Traditional old British decor and the dishes are served at a leisurely pace so that you can enjoy the food at ease. Not for diners who are in a rush.

Nice: rump steak has a nice crust. The Venison cottage pie, steak kidney pie and chicken mushroom pies were tasty too with light pastry.

The Black Forest gateau cake is not the usual Black Forest cake as the cherries are served separately from the cake. Quite nice,

An enjoyable meal and delicious food. Our waiter seemed to be lacking engagement and more task focused, so felt that slightly let down the overall experience. The venue is a really interesting place and enjoy a meal and something different. Pleased we have visited as it was an interesting experience and enjoyed the food.

My first visit here and I was not disappointed. A beautiful, historical restaurant with excellent staff and wonderful food. The rib of beef I had was cooked to perfection and tasted superb especially with the homemade horseradish sauce. Really could not fault the service from our waiter (we had a table of 6 for him to look after) he was exceptional and sorry I didn't get your name. Yes the lunch was expensive but the experience was worth every penny. Can highly recommend it as a "London Experience" that should be on your bucket list

The atmosphere is great. The staff and focussed on customers and nothing is too much trouble. The food is delicious. A bit expensive but is a great place to dine for a treat.

A classic favourite in London, tucked away just behind Covent Garden, a snug comforting atmosphere with plush cosy seating and well set tables.
A must for traditional English fare, well prepared, well presented and full of taste. Service is attentive and pleasant. Arrival of dishes may appear slow, but this is a place to relax and absorb the atmosphere over a leisurely lunch, taking your time to appreciate away from the bustling crowds of Covent Garden.
Personal favourites remain their excellent oysters, a perfect steak and kidney pudding, a golden syrup steamed sponge, and an always perfectly matured Stilton served as it should be.
