Description: Originally opened in 1927, the Rex Whistler Restaurant was described as 'The Most Amusing Room in Europe', owing to its specially commissioned mural, The Expedition in Pursuit of Rare Meats by the British inter-war artist Rex Whistler. The restaurant celebrates the finest seasonal British seasonal produce and has gained a well eared reputation for having one of the capital's finest wine cellars. Imbibe Wine list of the year 2014 The Tate's wine cellar has long been famous for its extensive collection of fine wines, half bottles at exceptional prices. The cellar is curated by Hamish Anderson and he is delighted to make recommendations and decant wine prior to your arrival.

the restaurant was closed for some time because the mural had to be renovated. and the mural is what makes the rex whistler unique. it's location in the tate britain doesn't hurt, either, especially at a nice corner of the building with a patio. the restaurant manages to be well lit by it's big windows and its crisp white linens and to be dark-wood cozy at the same time. i've always found the food very well-prepared even if it isn't haute cuisine. but that's not the point. it's an absolutely lovely place to sit, enjoy of good lunch, and soak in the unusual and comforting room. i try to go every time i'm in london. you should, too.

Really unexpected beautiful meal, fantastic staff and to be able to sit and eat surrounded by Whistler master works just amazing. Tube access great. Food well superb, wine fantastic. In London the competition is hot, so you have to be a notch above. I can say, go, eat, enjoy.

The restaurant is a great place to eat with very good food and great wines. The restored mural makes the restaurant a special place to eat. The food isn't cheap but it is good value for the quality of food and service.

I visited Tate Britain for the first time in a while with some friends, and we started our visit with lunch in the Rex Whistler Restaurant. The decor is wonderful, with fabulous murals. Service is of the highest standard - polite, friendly and efficient. The menu is quite short (say 4 starters, 4 mains) but we were all very happy with our selections. I had the terrine to start, which was really meaty with a wonderful texture. To follow I went with the beef, which was again excellent. The stand-out feature for me was the "wine matching". There is an excellent wine list, but if you go for wine matches the sommelier will select a wine specifically for your dish. I had matches for both the starter and the main, and they were truly excellent - an excellent idea and well worth trying. Lunch in this restaurant really is an excellent addition to a visit to this fantastic gallery, and I recommend them both thoroughly.
