Description: Filled with opera luvvies, tourists and eccentric Londoners, Sarastro has earned itself an iconic reputation in London's West End for its opulent decor and flamboyant food. Part decorative stage set, part bric-a-brac store, the dining room at Sarastro - which is located in Drury Lane - features crushed velvet tablecloths, cosy booths and semi private opera booths seating on the theatrical mezzanine level overlooking the restaurant. This charismatic setting is a dining experience you won't forget, and the menu is Mediterranean with a nod towards Turkey. Classic dishes include the lamb shank, the grilled sea bass and the pan-fried mussels in tomato sauce.

I wouldn't usually write a negative review of a restaurant unless I had provided the feedback to the manager first however as we were not once asked how our meal was during the entire evening it left the impression that they do not wish to know.

4 of us dined here on Saturday evening and were immediately served bread and olives, lovely. We then didn't see a waiter for a good 30 minutes in order to ask for drinks. He did apologise upon his return as a large party had taken up his time. We ordered our drinks and food at this time. The starters came which included a couple of dips however no bread or anything to eat with them. We stopped a waiter and asked if there was supposed to be bread with this and he said 'you had bread' by which he was referring to the bread we were served 30 minutes earlier. We didn't realise we had to hold onto this in case someone was to order a dip. He did go and get further bread at this point.

Then the mains arrived however one short. He explained that the chef hadn't seen the steak on the ticket and could he get anything else? My friend said she would wait for the steak to be cooked. Obviously the rest of us had then finished our meal by the time her food arrived.

It was a nice touch that they had a band playing in the restaurant however I was not so impressed when a band member came round asking for money. I felt a little embarrassed and guilty that we had no change on us. Not a feeling you want when having a meal out.

We had a long wait before our plates were taken away. We were not offered desserts and had to flag someone down again to request the bill. When the bill came it had a service charge included and we decided as a group that we would not pay this and split the bill. When the waiter was processing the payment you could see that he knew the tip wasn't being paid however didn't ask if everything was ok or they could have done anything better. He just left promptly only to return a minute later to ask us to leave the table as our 2 hour slot was up!

I will say that the decor was fab. Some of the food was very nice however I will not be returning based solely on the service, such a shame.

I've been to this restaurant on many occasions, but on this visit we were a group of 14 people.

Reservations were simple to make, and due to some of out members being more senior we requested the table on the ground floor. No problems in the reservation for that. If you are able to, try one of the balcony areas.

As we were a group we had the set menu. A good choice of options but we went for a communal mixed meze starter and then individual choices for mains. All excellent and served with no long delays between courses like you get in some restaurants. So starter, main and a couple of beers came to £45 including 12.5% service charge. Very reasonable for a central London location.

Being Saturday night there was some live music which just added to the fun of the evening.

From the outside the restaurant is nothing special, just a red brick building with lots of flowers hanging from it. But as soon as you enter the door the interior changes, as if you have been transported from central London to far off lands. And as for the toilets, well the karma sutra painted all over the wall. No time to be prudish here.

Once again a great meal and a great night out with friends in a wonderful location. You have to give this place a go if you want something a little different.

I organised a surprise dinner for my sister, thankfully was quick and easy to reserve and no ridiculous minimum spend requirements. There was a set menu, starters was great however, there was a mix up with starters we didn't even get the whole lot and for 11 people it was nothing. Mains was such a let down, food was not tasty and really not all that. The decor was amazing and and was amazing atmosphere especially on the balcony. The service was really very poor, the staff were moody and very unhelpful, I wouldn't come back here purely for that reason

Wow, I visited this restaurant ten years ago and hoped it would still there. It was and it didn't disappoint. The whole restaurant has so much to look at decor wise and you proberbly haven't seen anything like it elsewhere !. The food is wonderful, and staff are attentive. We were lucky enough to be seated in one of the 'theatre boxes, which is accessed up a few stairs and our waiter Alex popped up the other steps to serve us. It was my daughters 21st and we had a surprise of a slice of cake. Main meal was delish, would have liked more of the wonderful gravy with the chicken
Tip when offered water, which we needed as it was a very hot day, it was served from a bottle and cost extra 4.50, ask for a jug ! Its not a cheap meal but not overly priced either.
The toilets do have 'interesting' art work and not for the faint hearted !
