Description: Filled with opera luvvies, tourists and eccentric Londoners, Sarastro has earned itself an iconic reputation in London's West End for its opulent decor and flamboyant food. Part decorative stage set, part bric-a-brac store, the dining room at Sarastro - which is located in Drury Lane - features crushed velvet tablecloths, cosy booths and semi private opera booths seating on the theatrical mezzanine level overlooking the restaurant. This charismatic setting is a dining experience you won't forget, and the menu is Mediterranean with a nod towards Turkey. Classic dishes include the lamb shank, the grilled sea bass and the pan-fried mussels in tomato sauce.

“Slow service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 August 2014

Went as a party of 22 and had requested the upstairs seats which probably didn't help but we did experience slow and inaccurate service. However, assuming most others will be going in a smaller party, the decor is wonderful and so unusual and the food was faultless. Extremely tasty, well presented and hot - I would recommend to anyone to who enjoys this type of food. Previous reviews mention the drawings in the toilets - yes there are a lot which are very explicit but nothing that you don't see in shop windows in Greece so suggest you just close your eyes whilst washing your hands! Think this would be an idea venue for parties which number up to about 6.

“Absolutely fantastic”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 August 2014

We had lunch in this restaurant and I have to say it was one of the best experiences ever had. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was delicious. Both the string quartet and the opera stars were very good. Yes the decor is way over the top but this is a restaurant that is worth a visit. Can't fault it and will definitely be going back.

wonderful restaurant, very unusual and fun. friendly staff and lovely food. Great entertainment, my particular favourite is Colin Roy on a Thursday night. He sings swing and motown, the conga often spills on to Drury lane.

“Good atmosphere, poor food”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 August 2014 via mobile

This was my second visit following an enjoyable evening at Sarastro the previous year. I went on a Thursday night with friends.

Inside, the atmosphere is lively and fun. Great music from Colin Roy who certainly gets people up and dancing. However, if you're seated in one of the upper levels (as we were) then visibility and space is poor.

Food; starters is a selection, tapas style, and was okay. Main course was a big disappointment; I had lamb shank which looked incredibly pale (as did my friend's) and lacked seasoning. Other friends also commented that the food was bland.

If you're looking for a fun style restaurant that will get you up and partying, then Sarastro is a good choice. However, food critics should avoid.
