“Breakfast in the Garden”
Reviewed 26 April 2014

I got to the V&A soon after it opened on Easter Saturday, after a hectic walk across London. The Garden Cafe was an oasis of peace and calm - the "breakfast" special of ham and cheese croissant plus coffee for £5 was very tasty and a good "pick-me-up" before a visit to the William Kent exhibition (highly recommended). It felt like the height of luxury to sit looking at the beautiful architecture in the V&A "garden" whilst having a good, strong coffee - how about a few sculptures to enhance the setting?

“romantic place for a cuppa”
Reviewed 15 April 2014

The V&A restaurant is an amazing venue, with four very different but very attractive sections and live music if you're lucky. Great choice of food. Not cheap but worth the money.

“Overpriced and bland”
Reviewed 2 April 2014

Took lunch the other day thinking i would treat myself. Wished I had not. Overpriced and bland, it is not worth it even to sit in the lovely rooms.

“Appalling experience”
Reviewed 1 April 2014

I imagine that this cafe is variable which explains the wide range of reviews; all I can say is that I went there for a treat and will never go again. It was quite early for lunch but my first two choices were finished and I was told with no hint of an apology to stand back and wait for 10-15 minutes until more was brought out . In the end I opted for something else: 'chicken with tomatoes and olives' which consisted of slightly undercooked chicken smeared with a rather sweet red colour, no sauce and no sign of an olive. The potatoes were flabby, the broccoli too undercooked (and I like raw broccoli). There was no salt or pepper in sight to compensate for the lack of taste. The staff were bad-tempered (underpaid? almost certainly overworked) and it was wildly over-priced, extortionate even, especially given that it was self-service. Some of this might have been more understandable if it had been the end of the lunch-time rush but was inexcusable at the beginning when there were few queues and the food had just come out of the kitchen. Never, never again!

“Good food in stunning surroundings”
Reviewed 1 March 2014

The V&A chose Benugo for their cafe concession which gave customers a reliable food options along in the stunning rooms created by William Morris and his contemporaries. There are hot and cold food options, salad and desserts and good coffee and tea.
